ORLANDO, Fla. -- Carolina Costamagna and Ana Garcia Navas combined for three wins in singles and doubles on Thursday to open the USTA Collegiate Clay Court Invitational at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
Costamagna beat Stetson's Maja Salibasic 6-0, 6-2 in a late draw update in the Garnet Singles Draw as the sophomore has now won five of her last seven singles matches.
Garcia Navas took down Joselyn Treyes of Florida Gulf Coast 6-3, 6-0 in the Gold Singles Draw. The freshman improved her singles record to 6-2 this fall.
"We had a good start to the tournament," explained K-State assistant coach Jordan Smith. "There are not many clay court events in college. It was good to see Ana and Caro make adjustments to the different court surface. Ana showed a lot patience to pull out the first set and finished strong in the second set. Caro started well and took control of the court, looking really comfortable on the clay."
Being partnered for the first time, Garcia Navas and Costamagna won their doubles match in the afternoon, taking down South Alabama's Laura Matuskova and Alexandria Stiteler 8-4 in the Gold Doubles Draw. After the two sides split the first two games, K-State raced out to a 7-2 lead before finishing off the victory.
"Ana and Caro looked very solid in doubles," said Smith. "They played aggressively from the start and were able to take advantage of the big points."
Friday's matches will take place at Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress. Garcia Navas opens the day with an 8 a.m. ET tilt against North Carolina State's Martina Frantova, who defeated the fourth seed of the Gold Singles Draw and 37th-nationally ranked Kennedy Shaffer of Georgia on Thursday. Costamagna, meanwhile, will take on Spencer Liang of Florida at 9 a.m. ET. In doubles, the two will face Sofia Baptista and Caroline Eberhart of UCF at 5:30 p.m. ET.
