Wildcats Set to Compete at ITA Regional Championship

MANHATTAN, Kan. - The K-State women’s tennis team will continue its season by playing at the ITA Central Regional Championship at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, October 13-17.

Competing this weekend for the Wildcats will be seniors Iva Bago, Livia Cirnu, Palma Juhasz and Maria Panaite. Also competing for K-State will be junior Carolina Costamagna and sophomores Ana Garcia Navas and Millie Stretton.

“The regional championship is always the biggest fall tournament we play,” said head coach Danielle Steinberg. “This year’s field is the deepest and largest it’s been in recent years, which is exciting. We are coming off two back-to-back tournaments, and played a lot of matches recently, which means we are coming into this week in very good match form. Our doubles have been outstanding so far, and we really feel like we can be a legitimate threat in this tournament.”

A majority of the Wildcats have experience playing in at ITA Regionals. Last year, Garcia Navas and Costamagna both picked up two wins individually, making it to the singles round of 32 in their first appearance. Garcia Navas also picked up a doubles win paired up with Bago, a season ago. Bago will be playing in her third ITA Regionals. Cirnu also picked up two individual wins in last year’s tournament.

K-State women’s tennis has seen success in doubles play in the early season. The team has combined for three doubles championships in their first two tournaments. Garcia Navas/Stetton, Costamagna/Juhasz and Bago/Cirnu will be the three Wildcat teams in a field of 64 duos.

“We have improved a lot in singles play as well, and are doing a better job with putting a full high-level match together,” added Steinberg. “I want the team to have fun this week, and enjoy playing at the highest level; especially for our 4 seniors who will get to play their final regional championship.”

After the ITA Regional Championship, the Wildcats will have some time off before they will play in the San Diego State Fall Classic, November 11-13.
