Eklund Tied for 11th after Round One in Jonesborough
Oct 13, 2017 | Men's Golf
Kansas State sophomore men's golfer Jacob Eklund carded a 2-under par 70 to lead the Wildcats during the first round of the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate on Friday at the par-72, 7,147-yard Blackthorn Club.
Backed by two birdies and an eagle in the front nine, Eklund is tied for 11th and is just two strokes from residing in the top five. K-State will look to improve on its 3-over par 291 score in the second round as the Wildcats reside in a tie for ninth place.
"It was an up and down day for us," head coach Grant Robbins said. "We made quite a few birdies, but we had way too many three-putts, which kept us from gaining any kind of momentum."
Texas native Ben Fernandez and teammate Trent Evans are tied for 38th place after recording a 1-over par 73. Fernandez equaled Eklund's eagle on No. 8, which sprung him to a bogey-free back nine with two birdies.
Freshman Matthieu Caron was not able to capitalize on his five birdies as he recorded a 3-over par 75 to sit in a tie for 54th place. Jeremy Gandon carded 5-over par 77 and enters the second round tied for 66th.
"The guys are playing well enough that if we can cut down on some of those mistakes, we can put together some good rounds over the weekend."
Penn State holds a three-stroke lead after firing an 11-under par 277 on Friday. Penn State's JD Hughes is the front-runner on the individual leaderboard at 6-under par 66, one stroke ahead of a three-way tie for second place.
Kansas State tees off the second round of the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at 9:20 a.m. Live scoring can be found at www.golfstat.com.
