K-State, SIDEARM Launch Roku App
Nov 15, 2017 | Athletics
MANHATTAN, Kan. – In another step aimed at providing exposure for student-athletes and teams, and enhancing the digital fan experience, K-State Athletics, with digital media partner SIDEARM Sports, has released its first over-the-top (OTT) app in the Roku Channel Store, delivering live and on-demand K-StateHD.TV content, all for free.
Roku, a set-top-box streaming device that retails for as low as $29.99 or service integrated into newer smart TVs, has more than 15 million active monthly user accounts and is estimated to have more than 30 million active monthly users – users that can now access K-StateHD.TV content by downloading the KStateSports app.
Users will find the same great live third-tier content and shoulder programming – including coaches shows, highlights, student-athlete profiles and game replays – they've grown to expect from the K-StateHD.TV subscription product, which was made free to all at the start of the 2017-18 school year when K-State became SIDEARM's 1000th partner.
"We're always working to tell the stories of our student-athletes and teams in excellent and engaging ways, and this app opens another, new path of distribution for that live and on-demand content," Kenny Lannou, K-State Senior Associate AD for Communications/Public Relations, said. "The app also positions us well in an ever-changing broadcast landscape and provides a way for cord-cutters and traditional television viewers to enjoy a portion of K-State content on the screens they're used to consuming."
K-State's season-opening basketball double header contests against Stephen F. Austin and American were the first live events to be broadcast through the platform. That programming will continue to be offered simultaneously through the department's official athletics website, K-StateSports.com, with further OTT distribution currently in development.
In addition to third-tier live video streams – games K-State has exclusive rights to distribute outside of Big 12 Conference agreements, generally one non-conference football game, a handful of men's and women's basketball contests and other non-selected Olympic sports – the Roku app carries all K-State Radio Network audio feeds. First and second tier video content remains subject to Big 12 Conference agreements and distribution through traditional over the air TV like ESPN and Fox Sports and their associated OTT products (ESPN3 and FoxSportsGo).
Game-by-game broadcast information can be found on the schedule pages at K-StateSports.com, in each team's game notes or in preview stories posted in advance of each contest.
The Wildcats are just the fifth SIDEARM property with a Roku app and are among four Big 12 institutions with a presence on the streaming platform.
