K-State Second Half Rally Falls Short at (19/18) Missouri

COLUMBIA, Missouri – Kansas State looked to register the road upset with a furious second half rally at (19/18) Missouri on Thursday night in the Big 12/SEC Challenge, but the Tigers defended Mizzou Arena with a 73-59 win.

Kansas State (5-2) was led by junior guard Kayla Goth with 17 points. This was Goth's seventh straight game in double figures this season and the 15th in her career.

Joining Goth in double figures were sophomore forward Peyton Williams with 13 points and nine rebounds, while freshman guard Cymone Goodrich added a career-high 11 points, all in the second half.

Missouri (6-1) was led by the career-high performance of sophomore Amber Smith with 23 points. Aiding Smith was Cierra Porter with 16 points and Lauren Aldridge with 11. K-State held Missouri All-America candidate Sophie Cunningham to one point, as she came into the contest averaging almost 18 a game.

Kansas State held a 5-4 lead with 6:41 remaining in the first quarter. Missouri would then string together a 13-1 run over the next six and a half minutes. Amber Smith scored seven of the 13 points for the Tigers. K-State ended its field goal drought with a jumper by Kayla Goth with six seconds remaining to trail 17-8 entering the second quarter. The eight first quarter points were the fewest by K-State in a first quarter this season.

Missouri started the second quarter by knocking down four 3-pointers to build a 29-13 lead with 5:39 remaining in the frame. Smith knocked down her second, while Jordan Chavis connected on consecutive possessions to increase the lead to 16.

The Tigers would extend their lead to 20 on two occasions in the first half and hold a 41-22 lead at the break. In total in the second quarter, Missouri connected on six 3-pointers.

K-State was held to its lowest field goal percentage in a half this season at 27.6 percent (8-of-29) in the opening stanza. The 22 first half points were the fewest in a first half for K-State this season and fewest since scoring 21 in the first half against Stanford in the second round of the 2017 NCAA Tournament. Missouri shot 48.6 percent from the field (17-of-35) including a 7-of-13 effort from beyond the arc.

Missouri increased its lead to 23 points, 51-28, as Cierra Porter scored eight quick points to start the third quarter. K-State would win the third quarter, 20-14, using a 14-4 run to end the quarter. Goodrich registered eight points in the third frame to bring the Wildcats back to within 13, 55-42.

The Wildcats were able to narrow the game to eight, 57-49, and force a Missouri timeout with 7:24 remaining in the fourth quarter. Rachel Ranke finished a backdoor layup to start the quarter. Goodrich answered a Missouri layup with a 3-pointer from Goodrich. Williams added a fadeaway jumper to force the Missouri timeout.

Missouri would respond out of the timeout with another 3-pointer from Smith and increase the lead to 11, 60-49. Kaylee Page finished a left-handed layup with 5:54 remaining in the final quarter to bring K-State within eight, but a Porter jumper kept K-State down 10, 62-52.

An awkward layup from Ranke kept the Wildcats within nine, 63-54, with 4:22 remaining, but a Frericks layup and Smith's fourth 3-pointer of the night to give the Tigers a 68-54 lead with 2:43 left in the game.

K-State ended the night shooting 38.7 percent (24-of-62) from the field, while Missouri notched a 51.7 percent effort (31-of-60). The Wildcats shot 48.5 percent in the second half from the field. K-State finished with a 32-30 edge in points in the paint, but Missouri controlled the glass, 39-28.

Kansas State will begin a five-game home stand on Wednesday, December 6, against UT Arlington. Game time against the Mavericks is set for 7 p.m. Wednesday's game will be broadcast on ESPN3 and will be available on the K-State Sports Network.
