Weber Announces the Signing of Shaun Williams
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State head coach Bruce Weber announced the signing of high school standout Shaun Williams (St. Louis, Mo./Hazelwood Central) on the first day of the Fall National Signing Period on Wednesday.
A 6-foot-3, 170-pound point guard, Williams continues the legacy of St. Louis area signees for K-State, which includes current sophomore and former high school teammate Xavier Sneed and freshman Levi Stockard III (Vashon) as well as recent graduate D.J. Johnson (Parkway North). He is the 20th St. Louis area signee dating back to Jack Thomas (1969-72) on a list that includes 1980 Big Eight Newcomer of the Year Randy Reed (1980-82) and all-conference selections Vincent Jackson (1991-93) and Nino Williams (2011-15).
"Shaun is an outstanding addition to our basketball program," said Weber. "Because of our recruitment of Xavier (Sneed), we have been watching Shaun grow and mature since he was in the eighth grade. We knew he was developing into an outstanding player, but he really took a big step forward this summer. Shaun's play was one of the reasons Bradley Beal Elite was one of the top teams this past summer."
Williams helped Bradley Beal Elite to a 13-3 record this summer in the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League (EYBL), including a 7-2 mark in Division D. He guided the squad to a 5-1 record at the prestigious Peach Jam Tournament, July 12-14, where he averaged 7.6 points, 7.0 assists, 4.4 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game. Twice he dished out 9 assists in back-to-back days against Expressions [Mass.] Elite and Cal Supreme Elite.
"We really like Shaun's athleticism and quickness on the perimeter and his toughness especially on the defensive end of the court. He took it upon himself this summer to become a complete point guard. He can really get after you on defense, while he can push the ball and create on offense. He also has the ability to knock down a shot when you need it. We are really excited about what kind of player he can become at K-State."
With the departure of Sneed to K-State, Williams made a huge jump in production as a junior in 2016-17, leading Hazelwood Central in 12 categories (11 offensive categories) en route to helping the Hawks to a 17-11 record, which included a trip to the Class 5, District 3 Championship Game. He averaged a team-best 18.6 points on 47.4 percent shooting (155-of-237), including 35.2 percent (38-of-108) from 3-point range, to go with 3.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.6 steals per game. He knocked down 53.4 percent (117-of-219) of his 2-point field goals, while he connected on a team-best 83.8 percent (98-of-117) from the free throw line, which ranked fifth in the area.
For his efforts, Williams was a First Team Class 5 All-State selection by the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association and a First Team All-Suburban XII North Conference honoree.
Williams registered double-digit points in 19 of 24 games played, including eight games of at least 20 points and three games of better than 30 points. He ended the season with four consecutive games of 20 or more points, including back-to-back 30-point efforts in wins over Kickapoo and McCluer North in late February.
Williams scored a season-high 36 points in an 85-78 win over Kickapoo on Feb. 24, connecting on 14-of-28 field goals and 5-of-5 from the free throw line. Just four days later, he tallied 30 points against McCluer North on 9-of-13 field goals and 11-of-13 free throws to go with 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. He also registered a 34-point outing in an 88-80 loss to Hartville on Dec. 16, 2016, as he went 10-of-16 from the field, including 9-of-9 inside the arc, and connected on 13-of-18 from the free throw line. In the District 3 Championship game, he totaled 23 points and went a perfect 10-of-10 from the free throw line in a 66-63 loss to Pattonville on March 3.
As a sophomore in 2015-16, Williams helped the Hawks to a 24-5 overall record, including a 5-0 mark in conference play, and a No. 4 final St. Louis Post-Dispatch large school ranking. He played in all 29 games, averaging 6.8 points on 43.9 percent shooting with 2.0 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.1 steals per game. He was one of two players (along with Sneed) to score in double figures in the state tournament loss to powerhouse Chaminade and current Boston Celtic Jason Tatum on March 9, 2016.
Aside from being a former teammate of Sneed for two seasons (2014-16) at Hazelwood Central, Williams also played against current freshman Levi Stockard III twice when he was at Vashon High School, splitting a pair of games. Williams posted a season-tying 15 points in a 73-71 win over Vashon on Dec. 4, 2015 and then added 23 points on 9-of-17 field goals with 5 rebounds, 2 assists and one steal in a 64-50 loss to Vashon on Feb. 22, 2017.
Williams and Hazelwood Central open the 2017-18 campaign on Nov. 27 at Vianney High School.

"Shaun is a big, athletic play-making guard and a really tough-minded player whose best basketball is still ahead of him. I have known him since he was in the sixth grade, so I have seen his progression and couldn't be any prouder of the type of player he has become. I really trust and respect Coach (Bruce) Weber and Coach (associate head coach Chris) Lowery and know that Shaun is in really good hands with them. I know they will push him to be the best player he can possibly be."
Bradley Beal Elite Head Coach Corey Frazier:
"In the past few years that he has been with us, Shaun has truly developed into a floor general. He has shown all the physical traits and leadership necessary in running a team on both the offensive and defensive ends of the court. You don't see a point guard playing above the rim like Shaun does, he just attacks the rim. If he continues to work (and I know he will), the ceiling is really high for him."
