Nov 09, 2017 | Volleyball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State volleyball revealed the additions of Abigail Archibong, Holly Bonde and Gloria Mutiri during the National Letter of Intent (NLI) signing period, head coach Suzie Fritz announced Thursday.
Archibong (Shawnee, Kansas) is a 6-foot-1 outside hitter/middle blocker from Mill Valley High School and played for Club North. A 6-foot-2 outside/opposite hitter, Bonde (Minooka, Illinois) is a Minooka High School and UNO Volleyball Club standout. Mutiri (Sand Springs, Oklahoma), a 6-foot-2 right-side hitter, is from Charles Page High School and played her club ball for Club One.
"As a whole, this is a group of high-achieving young women that will fit in seamlessly with the outstanding women on our team," said Fritz of the recruiting class. "This group possesses not only a high level of athletic potential, but also an exciting combination of leadership, competitiveness and proven academic success and preparedness. These young women come from amazing and supportive families that are looking forward to becoming part of the K-State family."
Archibong, a three-year letterwinner at Mill Valley, led her team to the semifinal round of the substate tournament in Pittsburg in her senior season in which she was named first team all-conference. She was voted Offensive Player of the Year and Best Teammate on her squad while also receiving an all-conference academic honorable mention honor.
"Abby comes to us with good versatility, having experience in both the middle and outside hitter positions," Fritz said. "We were impressed with her athletic potential to hit and block at a high level and, after having the opportunity to work with Abby in camp, are very impressed with how quickly she learns. She is very driven and eager to learn and improve. We are excited about her future and development."
Bonde has collected over 3.00 kills/set while hitting over .450 in her senior season at Minooka, where she has led her squad to the 4A state tournament this upcoming weekend in Normal, Illinois. An all-conference selection, Bonde helped lead her team to a runner-up finish at the Illinois High School Association state tournament in 2016.
"We were mostly impressed with Holly's well-rounded skill set," added Fritz. "She has good size, length and athleticism for the skills that require power, as well as the versatility to hit and block at both pins to go with strong ball-handling skills. She has been exposed to a high level of competitive volleyball experiences through her high school and club situations and has been depended upon to fill many roles. Holly can be the glue that ties things together, which is an incredibly important role on a team."
Mutiri was recently selected to the Under Armour High School All-America Second Team, as announced by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). Mutiri was named to the all-state volleyball roster by the Oklahoma Coaches Association and voted the Tulsa World Volleyball Player of the Year. Mutiri was the leading scorer for the Sandites each of the past four years and averaged 4.50 kills/set in leading her team to the regional finals this past season.
"We are excited about the many outstanding qualities that Gloria will contribute to our team," Fritz said of Mutiri. "She is a fluid and explosive athlete with an extremely fast arm, in addition to being left-handed and best suited at the opposite position where she can impact both from a scoring and blocking perspective. Gloria possesses excellent communication skills and a high level of leadership potential and work ethic that will be tremendous assets."
Archibong and Mutiri will join the program for the upcoming spring semester upon early graduation from their respective high schools.
