LUBBOCK, Texas – Kansas State started a stretch of four-road games in the first five in the month of February with a 65-53 win at Texas Tech on Wednesday night. This was K-State eighth win in the last nine meetings with the Lady Raiders, including four straight.
Kansas State (17-6, 7-4 Big 12) featured four players in double figures led by senior center Breanna Lewis with 19 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks. Freshman forward Peyton Williams came off the bench to add 12 points and five rebounds. Junior forward Kaylee Page carded 13 points, while Karyla Middlebrook added 10 points and five rebounds.
Texas Tech (11-10, 3-7) was led by Ivonne CookTaylor with 17 points, while Brittany Brewer added 14 points.
K-State controlled the paint with a 42-18 advantage in points in the paint and a 41-34 edge on the glass. The Wildcats shot 43.5 percent (27-of-62) from the field and held the Lady Raiders to a 37.5 percent (21-of-56) effort.
Texas Tech dashed out to an 8-0 lead, as Brittany Brewer tallied six points during the opening run. K-State climbed back into the game with a 13-2 run to secure a 13-10 lead. Peyton Williams led the charge with eight points during the rally. Texas Tech would score the final four points of the quarter to take a 14-13 lead at the end of the first quarter. It was the first time in Big 12 play this season that Texas Tech held the lead after the opening quarter.
Lewis took over for Williams in the second quarter, as she notched eight points in the frame to take a 29-26 lead into the locker room. After Texas Tech took a 22-21 lead on a Dayo Olabode three-pointer with 4:30 left in the quarter, the Wildcats responded with an 8-2 run.
Senior Jessica Sheble started the run with a layup and was followed by a backdoor layup from Kindred Wesemann. Lewis then converted a hook shot and a contested jumper to build K-State's lead to 29-24 with 1:24 left in the half.
The Lady Raiders tied the game at 33 with 8:19 left in the third quarter, as Ivonne CookTaylor buried a three-pointer. K-State responded to the three with a 11-2 run to build a 44-35 lead with 4:57 left in the frame. Lewis converted a pair of interior shots, while Karyla Middlebrook finished a layup and free throw in transition.
Texas Tech narrowed the game to five, 47-42, but Middlebrook converted a layup before the buzzer to give the Wildcats a 49-42 lead entering the final quarter. Middlebrook registered eight points in the third quarter.
An 11-2 run by K-State to open the third quarter increased the Wildcat lead to 60-46. Page knocked down back-to-back three-pointers to highlight the run.
K-State will end its two-game road trip on Saturday evening, as the Wildcats face (12/13) Texas at 5 p.m., in Austin. The game will be broadcast on the Longhorn Network and on the K-State Sports Network.
