MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State middle blocker Elle Sandbothe has been named to the 12-member U.S. Women’s Junior National Team roster that will compete in the 2017 U20 Women’s Pan American Cup, USA Volleyball announced Wednesday.
Sandbothe, who completed her freshman season in the fall for the Wildcats, will travel to San Jose, Costa Rica, to participate with the Women’s Junior National Team in the Pan American Cup from May 8-13. The event is the final opportunity for Team USA to qualify for the FIVB Junior World Championships, July 14-23 in Cordoba and Boca del Rio, Mexico.
Should Team USA qualify for the World Championships, a training camp will be conducted from July 2-12 to identify the 12-player team that will compete at the world championships. Athletes that participate in the Pan American Cup are guaranteed a spot in the training camp to compete for a spot on the roster for the world championships.
The U.S. will compete in Group A in the U20 Women’s Pan American Cup with pool play matches against Argentina on May 9 and Dominican Republic on May 10. The quarterfinals will take place on May 11 with the third-best pool winner and the three second-place finishers. The semifinals will be on May 12 with the quarterfinal winners advancing to meet the two teams with the best record in pool play. The medal round is scheduled for May 13.
A 6-foot product of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, Sandbothe was named to the Big 12 All-Freshman Team after a season in which she led the Cats with 1.09 blocks/set and started the final nine matches of the season, including the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament.
K-State is coming off its 12th 20-win season under head coach Suzie Fritz and fifth trip to the NCAA Tournament in the last six years.
