May 15, 2017 | Baseball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – A day after tossing seven scoreless innings, Kansas State freshman right-hander Kasey Ford was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.
Ford became the first freshman in program history to be named conference Pitcher of the Week. He picked up his third win of the season in a 10-3 victory Sunday at rival Kansas, as he scattered four hits in his season-long outing, striking out three without yielding a walk. In the game, KU hit .154 batting average against him with only one extra-base hit as he retired the first batter he faced in each of his seven scoreless frames.
The Bella Vista, Arkansas, product collects K-State’s fifth weekly honor bestowed by the Big 12, joining Parker Rigler (pitcher), Jake Scudder (player) and Will Brennan (newcomer, twice). Ford is the first freshman pitcher to claim a weekly conference honor since Jake Matthys (newcomer) in 2013.
In his freshman campaign, Ford has a 3-1 record and a 4.05 ERA (18 ER, 40.0 IP) in five starts and 12 relief appearances. He has allowed just eight walks in his 40 innings with 19 strikeouts.
K-State (27-24, 6-15 Big 12) travels to Wichita for a Tuesday-night showdown with Wichita State at 5 p.m. The game with the Shockers will stream live on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app. Fans can also listen to on KMAN 1350 AM, 93.3 FM and streaming free online at k-statesports.com.
