Nelson Tied For 16th After First Round of NCAA Regional

ATHENS, Georgia – Senior Paige Nelson led the way for the Kansas State women’s golf team on Monday as she is tied for 16th place after the first round of the 2017 NCAA Athens Regional at the par-72, 6,344-yard University of Georgia Golf Course.
Nelson birdied two of her final four holes and finished the day at 1-over par 73. The 13th-seeded Wildcats carded a 22-over par 310 to sit in 16th place, but they are within only eight shots of the top 10.
“We hit some good golf shots today, but this is the type of golf course where a small miss can put you on the wrong side of the hole,” said head coach Kristi Knight. “We just got on the wrong side of the hole too many times today and shot ourselves in the foot.”
Seniors Madison Talley and Katherine Gravel-Coursol, along with junior Connie Jaffrey, are tied for 67th at 7-over par 79. Sophomore Chloe Weir carded an 8-over par 80 and is tied for 78th.
Michigan State, which won its conference tournament to make the postseason, is the current team leader at 4-under par 284. The 14th-seeded Spartans hold a five-stroke lead over top-seeded Alabama, while No. 2 Georgia is tied for third place with Northwestern at 5-over par 293. Wake Forest’s Jennifer Kupcho is the individual leader at 4-under par 68.
Round two of the 2017 NCAA Athens Regional will tee off at 7:30 a.m. (ET), while the Wildcats will take the course at 9:09 a.m., off the 10th tee. Live results can be followed at www.golfstat.com.
