Volleyball Collects Seventh Straight AVCA Team Academic Award

MANHATTAN, Kan. – For the seventh straight year, Kansas State volleyball earned the Team Academic Award from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), the organization announced Monday.
The honor, which is given to programs with a team GPA of 3.30 or higher during the academic year, is the 15th in K-State volleyball history. The streak of seven in a row equals its longest in program history that spanned from 2001-08.
The team accolade caps another strong academic year for the Wildcats. In total, the group had a program-record 11 named Academic All-Big 12 (including nine first team selections), 16 earned Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll in the fall and 17 in the spring, and two were selected to the Big 12 Academic All-Rookie Team. Katie Brand and Kersten Kober were both named CoSIDA First Team Academic All-District.
The AVCA Team Academic Award, which was initiated in 1992-93, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 GPA on a 5.0 scale. This year, a record 822 team received the award, including 145 in Division I.
K-State was one of three Big 12 schools, along with Baylor and West Virginia, to earn the Team Academic Award.
The Wildcats return 10 letterwinners from last season’s NCAA Tournament team and open their season on August 25 against Pacific in the Oregon State Invitational at Corvallis, Oregon. The home opener vs. Arkansas is Thursday, August 31.
