Aug 26, 2017 | Volleyball
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Redshirt junior outside hitter Kylee Zumach led K-State's offense for the second straight day, as the Wildcats swept Idaho, 25-23, 25-18, 25-25, Saturday at the Beaver State Classic at Gill Coliseum.
Zumach (13 kills, 11 digs) recorded the second double-double of her career and K-State's (2-0) first this season. Ten of Zumach's team-high 13 kills came on 20 attacks over the final two sets. As a team, the Wildcats produced 25 more kills than Idaho (48-23).
K-State's defense – thanks to a 51-28 edge in total digs – stifled the Vandal offense, holding Idaho (0-2) to 10 or fewer kills in all three sets and a team match hitting percentage of .116. The Cats posted a team efficiency of .320, the second straight match hitting over .300.
Four Wildcats – Zumach, Bryna Vogel, Peyton Williams and Brynn Carlson – hit better than .300 with at least 10 attempts.
Trailing Idaho 21-17 in the opening set, three Zumach kills sparked an 8-2 run that handed K-State a 25-23 set win. Vogel had five kills and libero Reilly Killeen had two of K-State's four service aces in a set that had eight lead changes.
The Wildcats rode that momentum into set two as they scored the set's first eight points on their way to a 25-18 win. Zumach recorded six kills in the frame and junior-transfer Brooke Smith tallied five assists in her K-State debut. The K-State defense forced Idaho into more attacking errors (6) than it had kills (5) in the set.
In the final set, K-State was forced to call a timeout after Idaho claimed a 12-11 lead. The Cats responded by scoring 14 of the next 17 points to win the set 25-15 and earn the straight-set victory. K-State posted a match-best .469 hitting percentage (18k-3e-32ta) in set three. Carlson (7 kills, 8 swings) and Williams (5 kills, 7 swings) spearheaded the offense's efficiency while recording their first kills in a Wildcat uniform.
Killeen led the Wildcats with 16 digs while junior Zsofia Gyimes posted a pair of blocks. Setter @dixon dished out a match-high 33 assists. Dixon, Gyimes and Killeen all had two service aces.
