Two Wildcats in Top 15 at Trinity Forest Invitational
Sep 25, 2017 | Men's Golf
With Ben Fernandez and Jeremy Gandon each residing in the top 15 on the individual leaderboard, the Kansas State men's golf team moved up one spot during the second round of the Trinity Forest Invitational on Monday at Trinity Forest Golf Club.
Fernandez, a native of Southlake, Texas, carded a 2-under par 69 during the second round to move into a tie 15th at even-par 142. His 32-spot jump on the leaderboard was the biggest of the day. Gandon is also at even par following a 1-over par 72 on Monday.
As a team, the Wildcats made a six-shot improvement in the second around at 6-over par 290 and enter Tuesday's final round in 12th at 18-over par 586.
"We played better today," head coach Grant Robbins said. "Ben and Jeremy were very solid and Jacob (Eklund) had a nice bounce back from yesterday. The course really firmed up throughout the day and the closing holes played really difficult."
Eklund carded a 2-over par 73 on Tuesday and enters the final round tied for 73rd at 13-over par 155. Roland Massimino is tied for 67th at 10-over par 152, while JC Campbell is in 78th at 20-over par 162.
"The key to playing well here is to be able to hit your approach shots to very precise locations," Robbins said. "We just have to play each shot as they come to make sure we are committed to our target and make a confident swing each time."
Florida and Auburn sit atop of the leaderboard at 8-under 560. USC's Justin Suh and Auburn's Brandon Mancheno are tied atop the individual leaderboard with a 6-under par 136 score.
The final round of the Trinity Forest Invitational begins at 8:30 a.m., Tuesday morning. Live scoring from Dallas can be found at www.golfstat.com, while final results will be posted at www.kstatesports.com following the round.
