K-State Concludes Strong Showing at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational
Jan 20, 2018 | Track & Field
IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Kansas State Track and Field teams concluded a strong showing at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa on Saturday, as the women's team placed fifth (58.33 points), and the men's team placed seventh (38 points) amongst elite competition.
In total, K-State accounted for six event victories, 19 personal bests and several shake-ups to the all-time K-State indoor performance lists in its performances at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational this weekend. LSU won the women's team competition with 114 points, while Iowa won the men's team competition with 143.50 points.
"For our first time traveling this weekend, things went relatively well," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto said. "We had some good performances, a lot of average and not too much bad. If going forward we get good work in the next few weeks, we should be ok."
In day two's action, junior Shardia Lawrence and sophomore Konstantina Romaiou battled for K-State in the women's triple jump. Lawrence, the school record holder in the event, placed second with a top jump of 13.09m/42-11.50 on her second attempt, behind only Tori Franklin represented by Oiselle.
"In terms of where they are in the season, I think they are about where they should be," Assistant Coach Vincent Johnson said of Lawrence and Romaiou. "I would have liked to see them get into a better rhythm on the runway and complete some of the jumps but overall it wasn't bad."
Romaiou continued the impressive showing in the pit by leaping a personal-best 12.77m/41-10.75 to place sixth in the event. Romaiou's mark moves her into seventh on the all-time K-State indoor triple jump list, where she surpassed Kenija Collier's mark of 12.76m/41-10.50 set in 2015.
Sophomore Jullane Walker made a big impact in his second meet for the Wildcats, as he ran a 6.81 in the men's 60-meter preliminary to qualify for the finals. In the final event, Walker improved upon his race earlier in the day, finishing in 6.80, putting him 10th all-time on the K-State 60-meter indoor performance list.
In the shot put ring, K-State junior Brett Neelly looked to continue momentum he set from earlier this season, in which he tied his personal best of 18.94m/62-01.75 at the Wildcat Invitational on January 6. On Saturday, Neelly approached his top-mark with a throw of 18.40m/60-04.50 on his fourth attempt, which placed him second overall in the event.
The Wildcats continued their impressive showing on the track on Saturday, where they accounted for three event victories, all of which came in middle distance events. Freshmen distance duo, Cara Melgares and Sydney Collins both set a new personal best in the women's mile, including a strong effort by Melgares to cut over 10 seconds off her personal best (5:06.09) to win the event.
In the women's 800-meters, sophomore Erin Lee claimed the second event victory of the day, finishing the four laps in 2:17.92 to win the event. Lee was joined by freshman Victoria Robinson who placed second in the event, finishing in 2:19.99, which also set a new personal best for her.
In the men's mile, the Wildcats were well represented, placing three runners within the top five of the event. Sophomore Noah Stevenson set a new personal best of 4:15.03 to pace the squad, as sophomore Nicholas Skinner finished third in 4:19.42 and Sam Oxandale finished fifth in 4:27.28.
The Wildcats continue their road trip next weekend, as they travel to Fayetteville, Arkansas to compete in the Razorback Invitational on January 26-27.
Eleven teams will transcend upon the Randal Tyson Track Center, including the host Arkansas, K-State, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Iowa State, LSU, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, Texas A&M and Southern California. The two-day event is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. CT on Friday, January 26, and 10:15 a.m. CT Saturday, January 27.
