K-State Ties Oklahoma During First Day of Big 12 Match Tournament
Oct 12, 2018 | Men's Golf
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State men's golf team tied Oklahoma in their head-to-head matchup during the afternoon session of the first day of the Big 12 Match Tournament.
The Wildcats were led by junior Ben Fernandez, who won 6&5. Junior Jacob Eklund also tallied a strong first day, finishing 2 Up after playing 18 holes. Freshman Will Hopkins also won his head to head, 2&1. Senior Jeremy Gandon lost his match, 1 Up.
"I'm really proud of how our team played today," head coach Grant Robbins said. "We had a chance to win outright at the end but Jeremy's putt just slid by the edge. Jeremy Gandon played really well though, going 5-under par. Unfortunately it just wasn't quite good enough. Ben was very impressive as he didn't make a bogey today and was in control his entire match. I was especially proud of Will and Jake, as they both battled back with some clutch birdies late in their match to get the wins."
Senior Roland Massimino fell, 2&1, while sophomore Kyle Vance lost, 5&4.
"Roland (Massimino) was under par today as well," Robbins said. "The guys all played some really solid golf but we now just have to reset and get ready for a talented Iowa State team tomorrow morning."
The Wildcats will face seventh-seeded Iowa State tomorrow morning. The Cyclones are coming off of a two-loss day one. The afternoon session will feature K-State and third-seeded Texas. The Longhorns are coming off of a one win and one loss day, defeating Iowa State but falling to Baylor.
