Adams Leads K-State on Day One in Mississippi
Oct 14, 2018 | Women's Golf
WEST POINT, Miss.– Kansas State sophomore Ella Adams continued her solid play as of late on Sunday as she carded an even-par 72 during the first round of the Magnolia Invitational at the par-72, 6,320-yard Old Waverly Golf Club.
Adams, who is tied for 12th place after the first 18 holes, picked up birdies on Nos. 6 and 9 to close out her round after being 2-over par through 14 holes.
The Wildcats carded an 18-over par 306 to tie for 10th place as they are one of eight teams within 10 strokes of each other.
"Ella was very solid today," head coach Kristi Knight said. "She hit a lot of good shots and was finally able to hole a putt or two late in the round."
Trailing Adams by five strokes is fellow sophomores Reid Isaac and Niamh McSherry, with Isaac carding a 5-over par 77 and McSherry carding a 6-over par 78, to enter the second round tied for 45th and 55th place, respectively. Freshman Briony Bayles carded a 7-over par 79 to finish the day tied for 60th, while senior Chloe Weir is in 75th place at 13-over par 85.
"There is more positive there than what meets the eye on the scoreboard," said Knight. "However, it is frustrating, especially after the form we showed during the practice round. They are giving great effort. We must stay determined and have a strong belief in each other."
Invitational co-host Mississippi State is knotted up with Kennesaw State in first place at the end of round one as both carded an even-par 288. Kathleen Gallagher of LSU sits atop the individual leaderboard after shooting a 4-under par 68, and she holds a two-stroke lead over Charlotte Charrayre of Kennesaw State.
The Magnolia Invitational will continue Monday with tee times beginning at 9 a.m. Live results can be followed at www.golfstat.com
