Oct 15, 2018 | Women's Golf
WEST POINT, Miss.– After a rough first round, Kansas State senior Chloe Weir rebounded on Monday as she carded a 3-under par 69 during the second round of the Magnolia Invitational at the par-72, 6,320-yard Old Waverly Golf Club.
Weir, who tied her career low 18-hole score, started on the back nine and was on fire as she birdied four times with one bogey. On the front, she birdied No. 2 to move to 4-under par but bogeyed Nos. 4, 7 and 8. The Belfast, Northern Ireland, closed her round out on a high note, however, tallying an eagle on the ninth hole.
Weir's performance led her to an 18-spot jump on the leaderboard as she enters Tuesday's final round tied for 57th place at 10-over par 154.
As a team, the Wildcats improved off their round-one score by nine strokes during round two, shooting a 9-over par 297. K-State is tied for 10th with both East Tennessee State and Virginia Tech at 27-over par 603.
"The team showed determination today," head coach Kristi Knight said. "Chloe bounced back with an under-par round. Jared and I know we are close to shooting a low team score."
Sophomore Ella Adams leads all Wildcats at 4-over par 148. She enters Tuesday's round tied in 30th place.
"Ella fought for her round as she played her last nine even-par after struggling on first nine." Knight said.
Trailing Adams by three strokes is sophomore Reid Isaac, who remains tied for 45th place with a 7-over par 154 score thanks to a 2-over par 74 on Monday. Sophomore Niamh McSherry shot another 6-over par 78 in the second round and is tied for 61st place at 12-over par 156.
"Reid fought for her score today as she went 2-under par on her last 13 holes today," Knight said. "Niamh had one bad hole that hurt her score. However, she played a lot of good holes."
Rounding out the Wildcats is freshman Briony Bayles, who is in 67th at 13-over par 157.
"Briony rolled her ankle badly 15 minutes before her round. She was uncomfortable in the beginning, struggling to swing through and was 5-over early. But she hung in there and found a way to play her last 12 holes at 1-over par," Knight said.
Kennesaw State swapped spots atop the leaderboard with invitational co-host Mississippi State as the Owls have a one-stroke lead at 5-under par 571. Anika Bolcikova of Auburn leads all individuals after carding a 7-under par 137 through 36 holes.
The Magnolia Invitational will conclude Tuesday with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Live results can be followed at www.golfstat.com
