Deans in Top 20 Heading into Final Round

MANSFIELD, Texas– Kansas State sophomore Darby Deans had a solid second-round showing Monday en route to a 12-over par 154 score to sit in a tie for 17th following the first two rounds of the UT Arlington Invitational at the par-71, 6,095-yard Walnut Creek Country Club.
Deans shot a 9-over par 80 during round one before improving her score by six strokes with a 3-over par 74 in the afternoon, a mark that gave her a nine-spot jump on the leaderboard. The Frisco, Texas, tallied two birdies to go along with five bogeys in the afternoon.
"Darby played well this afternoon," head coach Kristi Knight said. "She did a great job keeping her composure and drove the ball well all day. Her iron play was not sharp during round one however she hung in there and battled to improve her iron play in round two, giving herself good looks at birdie."
Freshman Heather Fortushniak, who is making her collegiate debut, is three shots back at 15-over par 157, and she enters Tuesday's final round tied for 26th. The Brighton, Michigan, product started out strong with a first round score of 4-over par 75 before carding an 11-over par 82 during round two.
"Heather hit quite a few good shots in round one," said Knight. "She did a good job of keeping the ball in play. Her putting held her back a little although she was able to make birdies. She was not hitting as many fairways and greens in the second round. She told me after finishing today that she learned a lot. Overall, I am proud of both her and Darby. They can finish strong tomorrow."
Chanikan Yongyuan of Southern Utah and Olivia Schmidt of Arkansas State are deadlocked atop the individual leaderboard at 4-over par 146.
The UT Arlington Invitational concludes Tuesday with an 8:30 a.m., shotgun start for the final round. Live results of can be followed at www.golfstat.com.
