
Fernandez, Hopkins Pace K-State on Saturday

LOXLEY, Ala. – The Kansas State men's golf team found itself in the middle of the pack following the first and second rounds of the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational at thke par-72, 7,096-yard Steelwood Country Club on Saturday.
The Wildcats finished the first 36 holes at 11-over par 578, and they are tied for sixth place entering Sunday's final round.
Junior Ben Fernandez led K-State, carding a 1-under par 143 to be tied for seventh entering round three.
Freshman Will Hopkins, who is competing as an individual, found himself tied for first following round one, but he enters Sunday tied for fifth after tallying a 2-under par 142.
"It was an up and down day for us," head coach Grant Robbins said. "We got off to a pretty good start but made a lot of big numbers toward the end of the first round. I thought we were a little sloppy at the beginning of round two, but we did have some guys battle back with some birdies down the stretch."
Junior Jacob Eklund shot a 1-over par 145, and he enters Sunday tied for 18th place. Senior Roland Massimino placed right behind Eklund, carding a 2-over par 146 and is currently tied for 22nd.
Senior JC Campbell, who is competing as an individual, shot a 5-over par 149, placing him tied for 43rd. Sophomore Kyle Vance tallied a 9-over par 153, putting him in 60th place. Senior Jeremy Gandon shot an 11-over par 155 and finds himself tied for 62nd place heading into Sunday's final round.
"We just have to play smart and avoid the big numbers and we will be ok," Robbins said. "I expect us to bounce back and play well tomorrow."
Wake Forest is in the lead following Saturday's play after shooting 13-under par 563. The Deamon Deacons find themselves nine strokes up on Kennesaw State and 13 strokes ahead of Indiana.
Indiana's Brock Oschsenreiter sits atop the individual leaderboard heading into Sunday with his 7-under par 137. Wake Forest's Eric Bae sits one stroke back with at 6-under par 138.
The final round of the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational begins on Sunday at 8:30 a.m. Live stats can be followed at www.golfstat.com.
