Rough First Half Sends K-State to Loss Against (16/16) DePaul

CANCUN, Mexico – Kansas State looked to secure its first-ever win in the Cancun Challenge, but (16/16) DePaul used a barrage of 3-pointers in the first half to defeat the Wildcats, 79-59, on Friday.
DePaul (2-1) controlled the tempo of the first half, as the Blue Demons built a 45-20 lead at the half. K-State held an early 6-3 lead in the first quarter, but DePaul closed out the quarter with an 18-6 run to hold a nine-point advantage after the opening quarter. The Blue Demons piled onto their lead by outscoring the Wildcats 24-8 in the second quarter, as K-State was held to 2-of-11 shooting.
DePaul was 9-of-22 from beyond the arc in the opening half, while Kansas State was held to an 0-of-8 effort from behind the 3-point line. The Blue Demons benefitted from 18 first half K-State turnovers and capitalized with 21 points off those turnovers.
The 25-point deficit at the half was the largest since K-State trailed by 30 against Baylor on Jan. 25, 2017.
Kansas State (3-2) won the second half, 39-34. The Wildcats registered a season-high in field goal percentage for a half with a blistering 63 percent (17-of-27) to outscore the Blue Demons.
K-State was led by redshirt junior Jasauen Beard with a career-high 17 points on 8-of-12 shooting with three assists and three steals. Beard tallied 13 points in the second half.
Joining Beard in double figures was junior Peyton Williams with 10 points and six rebounds. This was the ninth straight game in double figures for Williams and her 32nd career game with 10 or more points and five or more rebounds.
DePaul was led by Mart'e Grays and Dee Bekelja with 12 points each.
Kansas State finished with a season-high 25 turnovers, which were the most since Feb. 10, 2018, at Texas. K-State ended the day by shooting 50.0 percent (25-of-50), but were held to a 2-of-12 effort from 3-point range (.167). DePaul tallied a 41.5 percent (27-of-65) performance from the field and were 12-of-40 (.300) from behind the arc.
Kansas State will conclude action at the 2018 Cancun Challenge on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. (CT), as the Wildcats face Princeton.
