
12 Wildcats Earn Lage Academic Achievement Award

MANHATTAN, Kansas – Kansas State student-athletes continue to receive recognition for their excellence in the classroom, as 12 Wildcats received the eighth annual Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award, which is the Big 12 Conference's highest academic honor, in an announcement by the league office on Tuesday.
The 12 recipients from K-State are: Jacob Biller, baseball (senior, kinesiology), Kelcy Fiser, soccer (senior, marketing), Joseph Gorthy, cross country (senior, industrial engineering), Adam Holtorf, football (sophomore, agribusiness), Shaelyn Martin, women's basketball (senior, kinesiology), Jaclyn Means, soccer (senior, nutrition and health), Kaylee Page, women's basketball (senior, accounting), Grace Reilly, rowing (senior, medical biochemistry), Zach Reuter, football (junior, biochemistry-pre med), Amanda Thate, cross country (junior, microbiology), Hudson Treu, baseball (senior, psychology), Megan Vanderpool, track and field (senior, biology).
In total, 92 student-athletes from Big 12 member institutions earned the honor in 2018. The award is in memory of Lage, who served as the Oklahoma State faculty athletics representative with the NCAA and the Big Eight/Big 12 Conference from 1983 until his death in 2007. He was the chairman on three occasions (1985-86, 93-94 and 2003-04).
In order to be eligible for the accolade, student-athletes must have lettered at least once in their career while maintaining residence at their institution for at least one academic year. The honoree, which can only be recognized once, should have 100 hours of earned credit with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.80 at the time of the nomination.
The Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award recipients will receive public recognition at the Phillips 66 Big 12 Basketball Championships.
K-State has had an outstanding start to the 2017-18 academic year. The Wildcats saw 31 student-athletes graduate in December of 2017. The fall and winter sports were recognized with the following honors: 56 Academic All-Big 12 recipients, football's Adam Holtorf was named a Second Team Academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), while women's basketball student-athletes Shaelyn Martin (first team), Kayla Goth and Peyton Williams (second team) were named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District VII teams.
Kansas State also had a total of 243 K-State student-athletes named to the Fall 2017 Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll. The 243 student-athletes to earn the honor marked the 18th straight semester K-State has placed 200 or more student-athletes on the honor roll.
Of the 243 K-State student-athletes earning the citation for their academic excellence, 50 registered a GPA of 4.0 in the fall semester. K-State ranks among the league's best in terms of academic success as it continues to set a national standard in terms of APR, as all programs are currently well above the required NCAA standard.
