Mar 10, 2018 | Track & Field
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State Track and Field freshman Tejaswin Shankar jumped a new Indian outdoor National record in the high jump at the Athletics Federation Cup in Patiala, India on Wednesday, where he won the Indian National Championship with a jump of 2.28m/7-05.75.
The freshman from New Delhi, India owns both the indoor and outdoor Indian national records, after breaking the indoor national record with a jump of 2.28m/7-05.75 at the Big 12 Indoor Championship on February 23. His jump of 2.28m/7-05.75 outdoors on Wednesday bests his previous record of 2.26m/7-05 set back in 2016 at the World Junior Games and secures him qualification into the 2018 Commonwealth Games, which are set to be held in Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia from April 4-15.
"It is very significant, we are always trying to look at the bigger picture, and for him to have an opportunity to represent his country at the Commonwealth Games, it was important," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto said of Shankar's jump and qualification for the Commonwealth Games. "He [Shankar] is doing well, he has trained very well, and he has done all of the things we have asked him to do. He is going to have a great career."
Shankar surpassed the qualification criteria for the Commonwealth Games of 2.25m/7-04.50, set forth by the Athletics Federation of India earlier in the day, before narrowly missing 2.31m/7-07 on his final attempts. Shankar is just one of three high jumpers from India to ever clear 2.25m/7-04.50.
Among outdoor competition this season, Shankar's jump on Thursday ties for the best in the world, where he is one of only four individuals to clear 2.28m/7-05.75 this season.
As only a freshman, Shankar currently holds the third best jump in Kansas State indoor history of 2.28m/7-05.75, behind only Erik Kynard Jr. (2.33m/7-07.75) and Scott Sellers (2.29m/7-06).
