Apr 13, 2018 | Men's Golf
Iowa City, IA. – Kansas State junior men's golfer Jeremy Gandon had a career day with a 6-under par 66 score during the first round to lead the second-place Wildcats in the Hawkeye Invitational on Friday at the par-72, 7,239-yard Finkbine Golf Course.
The Wildcats continue to stay hot, residing in second place after recording a 6-under par 282, just two strokes behind first-place Iowa State.
"The guys played a really solid round of golf today," said head coach Grant Robbins. "The conditions were tough with the wind, but I thought we did a great job of being patient and taking what the course could give us.
"The conditions tomorrow should be tougher with the wind and rain, so it is important for us to keep the same mindset and grind it out one shot at a time."
Gandon fired a bogey-free round of 66, tying his career-low round originally set during a victory at the 2015 Golfweek Conference Challenge.
Ben Fernandez lies in the top five at 2-under par 70 and is tied for fifth place. He is just two strokes away from third place.
JC Campbell and Roland Massimino are both tied for 24th at 1-over par 73. They look to shave one stoke off their first round score to break the top 20. Jacob Eklund is tied for 49that 4-over par 76.
The Hawkeye Invitational will continue with the final two rounds on Saturday at 9 a.m. Live scoring can be found at www.golfstat.com.
