MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State women's tennis program revealed the signing of Maria Ponomareva to a National Letter of Intent (NLI) for the 2018-19 season, as announced by head coach Danielle Steinberg.
Ponomareva, hailing from Belgorod, Russia, comes to K-State as the winner of the under-19 Saint Petersburg Championship in both singles and doubles.
"Maria is going to be a great addition to our program," said Steinberg. "She comes from a hard-working and humble family and possesses the work ethic that our program stands for. She is a counter-punch type of players that will want to outwork her opponent on the court."
Ponomareva also earned a spot in the semifinal round of the women's division of the Saint Petersburg Championship Open and earned an International Tennis Federation (ITF) world ranking of No. 964.
"I met her and her family and liked her attitude and what she stands for. We believe she will have an impact on our lineup right away," Steinberg added.
The 38th-ranked Wildcats (14-7, 4-3 Big 12) conclude the regular season with a pair of home matches against Oklahoma (Friday) and Oklahoma State (Sunday), before the Big 12 Championship in Austin, Texas, beginning April 26.
Friday's match against the Sooners is set for 3 p.m., while Senior Day is Sunday at 11 a.m. Both matches are scheduled to be held at Mike Goss Tennis Stadium, weather permitting. Should weather force the matches indoors, they will be held at Body First Indoor Tennis Center located at 3615 Claflin Road in Manhattan.
