Apr 23, 2018 | Men's Golf
TULSA, Okla. – K-State junior men's golfer Jeremy Gandon leads the Wildcats as he is in a three-way tie for second place at even-par 140 after the first two rounds of the Big 12 Championship on Monday at the Southern Hills Country Club.
Gandon registered a team-high seven birdies in the first two rounds and was the 18-hole leader at even par. Following a 1-under par 69 during the second round, Gandon is just one stroke away from first-place Viktor Hovland of Oklahoma State at the midway point of the championship. Hovland vaulted into first place with a 4-under par round in the afternoon.
As a team, the Wildcats are in 10th place at 34-over par 594, three shots behind West Virginia.
"Jeremy was very solid all day," head coach Grant Robbins said. "He did a great job of staying patient and really struck the ball well. As a team we struggled. The course is difficult and the greens here are extremely firm and fast – you have to be sharp in all aspects of your game. The guys are giving it everything they have, but we just have to play better."
Following Gandon on the leaderboard for the Wildcats is Roland Massimino, who is tied for 23rd at 6-over par 146 thanks to a pair of 73s on Monday.
Ben Fernandez and JC Campbell improved their second-round scores as they are tied 45th place at 14-over par 154. Jacob Eklund shaved 10 strokes off his first-round score but looks to improve on his 50th-place showing in round three. He enters play on Tuesday at 22-over par 162.
Iowa State is in first place at 9-over par 569, two shots ahead of Oklahoma. The Cyclones – unranked entering the event – leads a pack of seven teams all ranked in the top 45 in the nation.
Round three of the 2018 Big 12 Championship will begin with tee times at 8 a.m., on Tuesday. K-State will tee off hole No. 10 beginning at 9:30 and will be paired with West Virginia. Live scoring can be found at www.golfstat.com.
