Apr 27, 2018 | Baseball
Bradford struck out eight and scattered nine hits and one walk on his way to tossing his second consecutive shutout. Baylor (24-17- 3-13 Big 12) won its eighth straight game overall.
"He was really good," said head coach Brad Hill of Bradford's performance. "He was getting ahead on fastballs and made pitches when he needed to make pitches."
The Bears spotted Bradford with nine runs through three innings of play off K-State (18-24, 3-13 Big 12) starter Justin Heskett. Davion Downey's solo homer in the second kickstarted the BU offense. Nick Loftin and Richard Cunningham hit back-to-back home runs in the third inning.
"Once a team gets going, hitting can be very contagious," Hill added. "Once they got on a roll, everyone else rises up to that level and it's tough."
Downey turned in a game-high five hits (5-for-6) to go with three RBI and was a triple short of the cycle. Loftin went 4-for-7 with two driven in and three runs scored. Six Bears recorded multi-hit performances.
The Bears added four more in the fifth inning off reliever Quinton Potter and plated five more runs over the game's final three innings.
A pair of K-State freshman recorded their first collegiate hits, as Jaxon Passino and Terrence Spurlin each tallied pinch-hit singles.
Nine different Wildcats recorded a hit in the game, including leadoff hitter Will Brennan, shortstop Cameron Thompson and center fielder Drew Mount.
Bradford picked up his fifth win of the season (5-4) while Heskett was tabbed for his sixth loss (2-6). Heskett, a senior, allowed 11 runs (six earned) on 13 hits with two strikeouts in four innings.
