Bears Take Series From K-State Saturday
Apr 28, 2018 | Baseball
The Baylor (25-17, 8-9 Big 12) offense produced double-digit runs for the second straight game, scoring multiple runs in four separate innings, on 17 base hits. It was the Bears' ninth straight win overall and first series win over K-State (18-25, 3-14 Big 12) since 2015.
Wendzel, who went 2-for-6 in the game, started the Baylor scoring with a two-run double in the top of the first inning. The sophomore's extra-base hit capped a string of three straight hits to begin the game for the Bears off starter Hudson Treu.
Senior Kyle Barfield drove in two of the Wildcats' three runs with a bases-loaded single in the fourth inning. Junior Drew Mount started the inning with a double down the right field line, K-State's first extra-base hit of the series.
Rainer Ausmus, Hanz Harker and Cameron Thompson each singled in the game for the Cats.
Baylor starting pitcher Harden Kettler, who was spotted a 3-0 lead before he took the mound, earned the win after allowing just one earned run on three hits over five innings.
The Wildcats got one of the Bears' three first-inning runs back as Thompson brought home Will Brennan on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first.
Treu was tagged with the loss after allowing nine runs (three earned) on nine hits in 3 2/3 innings.
Five unearned runs in the fourth inning pushed Baylor's lead to 9-1. All nine BU hitters came to the plate in the inning that was extended by a K-State error. Baylor recorded five hits in the frame, including three consecutive run-scoring hits that ended Treu's day.
Barfield's two-run single cut the Baylor lead to 9-3. He was the third straight Wildcat to reach base to start the inning and his hit brought home Trent McMaster and Mount.
K-State junior Brogan Heinen, who lifted Treu, held Baylor scoreless and gave up just one hit over his first three innings of relief. Heinen allowed three runs on three hits in the eighth, picking up two strikeouts.
The Bears plated four runs off Gabe Littlejim in the eighth and ninth innings.
K-State was 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position while BU hit .500 (7-for-14).
Five Baylor hitters turned in multi-hit games while five drove in multiple runs.
