Marolf Shuts Down KU, K-State Evens Series
May 12, 2018 | Baseball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State starting pitcher Jared Marolf threw his second consecutive complete game, this time in shutout fashion, as the Wildcats evened the Sunflower Showdown with Kansas, 1-0, Saturday night at Tointon Family Stadium.
Marolf, a sophomore, scattered five hits in his nine innings of work, striking out three batters without a walk. He is the first Wildcat to throw a shutout since Parker Rigler no-hit Eastern Illinois on March 5, 2017.
"Great, great ballgame," said head coach Brad Hill. "So great to see Jared bounce back. He had some struggles but kept working hard and his last two outings have been outstanding. Pretty proud of him. Great effort by our defense and great pitching tonight."
"Usually [I throw] a slow and a slower ball," Marolf joked after the game. "But, really, it's pretty simple, just hit your spots. Make your pitch each time, doesn't matter if there are runners on, still need to make your pitch."
K-State (19-30, 4-19 Big 12) manufactured its run in the seventh inning, getting its first two men on with a leadoff walk drawn by Cameron Thompson that was followed by a Drew Mount single. Both moved into scoring position on a wild pitch before Trent McMaster lifted a sacrifice fly to score Thompson.
Kansas (23-26, 6-13 Big 12) starter Ryan Zeferjahn pitched all eight innings for the Jayhawks, limiting the Cats to three hits with nine strikeouts and two walks. At one point, KU's sophomore righty retired 10 straight Wildcat hitters.
Will Brennan had two of K-State's three hits, including a leadoff single, as he went 2-for-4. Mount's seventh-inning single accounted for the Cats' second base hit.
Thompson drew both walks off Zeferjahn.
Marolf held the Jayhawks hitless with two outs (0-for-8) and limited them to 1-for-12 (.083) with runners on base in helping K-State snap its seven-game skid.
The Wildcats and Jayhawks will decide the 2018 Sunflower Showdown Sunday at 12 p.m., in front of a national television audience on FS1. Fans can listen on the series' rubber match on the K-State Sports Network.
