MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State men's golfer Jeremy Gandon was rewarded for his successful junior season on Wednesday evening as he earned an individual bid into the 2018 NCAA Men's Golf Regionals, the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Committee announced.
Gandon is the No. 8 individual in the Stockton (CA) Regional, which will be conducted May 14-16, at The Reserve at Spanos Park.
"It means a lot to represent K-State. I love K-State and it means a lot to not only play for myself but for the school," Gandon said. "This year I was trying to focus more each tournament and tried to win as much as I could. I guess regionals is the consequence of that."
Gandon is the eighth Wildcat selected to participate as an individual in an NCAA Regional and the first since Matt Green in 2015. This is Gandon's first regional appearance, who was one of 45 players nationally to be selected to play as an individual this season.
"I am extremely happy for him," said head coach Grant Robbins. "He is definitely the hardest worker I have had. To see that hard work come to fruition like this, it is a good accomplishment for him. Towards the end of the spring, he started to relax a little bit and trust his preparation. He went out and just played golf, and we are starting to see the results."
The Wildcats' season leader with a 72.28 stroke average, Gandon earned numerous accolades on Wednesday aside from the regional bid as he was also dubbed the Big 12 Golfer of the Month for April and named to the All-Big 12 team. That came on the heels of a tie for first at the 2018 Big 12 Championship to become K-State's first medalist since 1951.
The Charpey, France, native will compete at the NCAA Stockton Regional among nine other individuals, including Carl Yuan (Washington), Riley Elmes (Loyola Marymount), Vinnie Murphy (Grand Canyon), Felix Mory (Cal State Northridge), Blake Tomlinson (Utah), Charles Corner (UTEP), Henry Lee (Washington), Ryan Han (UC Davis) and Michael Christifulli (Siena).
The NCAA Regionals consist of 81 teams and 45 individuals playing 54 holes at six different sites. The low five teams and low individual not on an advancing team in each regional will move on to compete in the 2018 NCAA Championship, May 25-30, at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
