MANHATTAN, Kansas – Kansas State's Brogan Barry (football) and Kaylee Page (women's basketball) were two of the 20 student-athletes selected by the Big 12 Conference to receive the 2017-18 Dr. Prentice Gautt Postgraduate Scholarships, announced today by the league office.
Barry, a two-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team selection, saw action in all 13 games in the 2017 season. Barry, a native of Topeka, Kansas, registered seven total tackles, including five on special teams, and registered his first career sack and first career pass break up.
Page, a product of Wamego, Kansas, was a three-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team recipient and was a recipient of the 2018 Big 12/Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award earlier this year.
In the 2017-18 season, Page averaged a career-high 9.0 points with a career-best 28 blocks. She also buried a career-high 58 three-pointers. During her time at K-State, Page set the career record for 3-point field goals made by a player six feet or taller with 151 connections.
The scholarships are named in honor of the late Dr. Prentice Gautt, a former Big 12 Conference staff member and student services' pioneer who passed away in March 2005. The list of all-time recipients has grown to 381 since the inception of the league in 1996-97. Starting in 2002-03, additional funding increased scholarship award winners to two per member institution.
To date the Big 12 has provided over $3.1 million for postgraduate education. The individual grants began at $2,500 in 1996-97, were raised to $5,000 in 1999 and increased to $6,900 for 2004-05. The awards climbed to $7,500 in 2006-07, moved to $9,000 in 2011-12 and are now at $10,000 since 2013-14.
Criteria for the awards includes a cumulative grade point average of 3.200 on a 4.000 scale, participation in at least two years of intercollegiate athletics at the nominee's respective institution and completion of athletics' eligibility. The student-athletes also must graduate from their respective member institutions within 15 months of their selection for a postgraduate scholarship and are expected to enroll in graduate/professional schools within two years of graduation. Three faculty representatives, one senior woman administrator and one director of athletics form the selection panel for the awards.
K-State, a Tier 1 Carnegie Foundation Institution, has had another outstanding academic year in 2017-18. In addition to 49 graduates this spring, the Wildcats saw 31 student-athletes receive their diplomas in December of 2017.
To date K-State student-athletes have been recognized with the following honors: 127 Academic All-Big 12 recipients, football's Adam Holtorf was named a Second Team Academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), while women's basketball student-athletes Shaelyn Martin (first team), Kayla Goth and Peyton Williams (second team), baseball's Jake Biller and track's Jeff Bachman and Emma Wren were named to the Google Cloud CoSIDA Academic All-District VII teams.
