Aug 20, 2018 | Tennis
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The K-State women's tennis team was bestowed with the NCAA Public Recognition Award for its outstanding Academic Progress Rate (APR), the NCAA announced.
The honor is awarded to teams with an NCAA Division I APR in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports for the 2016-17 academic year.
During the 2016-17 academic year, the Cats received their fourth consecutive ITA All-Academic Team Award for having a cumulative team grade-point average of 3.20 or above and went on to earn a fifth straight honor in 2017-18. Four seniors – Iva Bago, Livia Cirnu, Palma Juhasz and Maria Panaite – were each named ITA Scholar-Athletes after posting perfect 4.0 GPAs.
K-State, led by first-year head coach Jordan Smith, enjoyed unprecedented success on the court this past season. The Wildcats earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2003, where they upended 26th-ranked Kentucky in the opening round.
The Cats were one of 27 individual teams in the Big 12 to earn the distinction and one of six women's tennis programs. Women's tennis was the most-awarded sport, followed by women's cross country with four, including K-State's squad.
