Wildcats Fall Four Spots on Day Two
Sep 17, 2018 | Men's Golf
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Playing with just four guys due to an injury, the Kansas State men's golf team dropped four spots to 10th place following the second round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge on Monday at the par-72, 7,071-yard Cedar Rapids Country Club.
The Wildcats, who carded a 7-over par 295 in round two, were forced to play with a four-man lineup as Kyle Vance sat out the round due an injury sustained on Sunday. K-State stands with a 36-hole score of 7-over par 583 and, despite the fall down the leaderboard, can move up on Tuesday as the Wildcats are one shot away from ninth and four away from eighth.
"We didn't play very well today, especially on the back nine," head coach Grant Robbins said of his team, which played the front nine at 1-under par but was 8-over par on the second nine. "Having to play with four guys, I thought the guys had a mindset of not to play poorly instead of playing to play great. We have some adversity right now with Kyle being out, but we can't make excuses. These guys are capable of playing really good golf. They just need to let it happen."
Senior Jeremy Gandon leads the Wildcats with a 2-under par 142 to enter Tuesday's final round tied for 13th place. He was at 2-under par on the day through 12 holes but had a pair of bogeys down the stretch to finish the round at even par.
Junior Ben Fernandez was 1-over par on Tuesday and enters final-round play tied for 26th at 1-over par 145. Redshirt freshman Brian Choe and true freshman Will Hopkins each carded a 3-over par 75 on Monday. Choe enters Tuesday's final round tied for 32nd at 2-over par 146, while Hopkins is tied for 56th at 6-over par 150.
Arkansas State stretched its team lead with a 12-under par 276 on Monday and takes a commanding 12-stroke lead into the final round as the Red Wolves are at 23-under par 553. ASU has four players in the top 13, including first-place Julien Sale at 8-under par 136 and second-place Joel Wendin at 5-under par 139.
The final round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge begins on Tuesday with an 8:30 a.m., shotgun start. Live results can be followed at www.golfstat.com.
