Wildcats Have Up and Down First Round
Sep 21, 2018 | Women's Golf
GREENVILLE, S.C.– Kansas State freshman Briony Bayles had a strong showing on Friday as she carded a 2-over par 74 during round one of the Lady Paladin Invitational at the par-72, 6,278-yard Furman University Golf Course.
Bayles, who is tied for 24thplace, played both nines at 1-over par with birdies on Nos. 3 and 18.
The Wildcats had their best round of the young season as they shot a 14-over par 302 to stand in 11thplace at the conclusion of the first round. K-State is three strokes from both USF and Tulsa, which are tied for ninth place.
"Today was a combination of being tentative over a stretch of holes then at times playing freely and scoring," head coach Kristi Knight said. "There were quite a few positives out there. After the round, we talked about stepping up to the tee with more confidence, knowing we are going to play well instead of hoping. Jared (Helin) and I are proud of the effort today. The girls have made positive strides since last week. We will play our best golf when we focus on the process and stay in the moment."
Trailing Bayles by just a single stroke is sophomore Reid Isaac, who is tied for 33rdat 3-over par 75. Right behind Isaac were fellow sophomores Ella Adams and Niamh McSherry, who shot a 4-over par 76 and 5-over par 77 to be tied for 49thand 56thplace, respectively. Senior Chloe Weir rounded out the effort by shooting a 6-over par 78 to enter the second round tied for 64thplace.
Tournament host Furman stands in first place at the conclusion of round one. The eighth-ranked Lady Paladins carded a 5-under par 283 and hold a four-stroke lead over second-place North Florida. Haylee Harford of Furman and Lorena Tseng of Tulsa are knotted up atop the individual leaderboard at 4-under par 68.
The Lady Paladin Invitational will continue Saturday with the Wildcats' tee times beginning at 10:30 a.m. (ET) off hole No. 10. Live results can be followed at www.birdiefire.com.
