K-State Struggles During Round 2
Sep 22, 2018 | Men's Golf
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The Kansas State men's golf team turned in what looked to be a promising round Saturday before faltering over the final holes and dropping four spots to 14th place after the second round of the Maui Jim Intercollegiate. The Wildcats finished with a 7-over par 287 in round two on the par-70, 7,081-yard Mirabel Golf Club.
Combined with Friday's 3-under par 277, K-State sits with a 36-hole score of 4-over par 564, six strokes back of the next closest team Minnesota (548).
"It definitely wasn't the result we wanted," head coach Grant Robbins said. "I thought the guys fought pretty well for most of the round. We were 1-under par with a couple of holes to go and the wheels just completely came off."
"Our issues right now are all mental. We have to learn what it means to truly stay in the process and not let circumstances or fear have an impact on our ability to execute a shot. We will learn from this and move on. I'm confident we will bounce back strong tomorrow."
Senior Jeremy Gandon and junior Ben Fernandez led K-State during round two, each shooting a 1-under par 69 on day two, including eagles for both on par-5 No. 7. Gandon improved to 1-under par 139 and tied for 33rd going into Sunday's final round, while Fernandez was tied for 39th at even par 140.
Senior Roland Massimino, who was tied for third after Friday's opening round, slipped a bit during round two while shooting 3-over par 73, but still leads K-State with a 36-hole score of 2-under par 138 and in a tie for 27th place. Redshirt freshman Brian Choe shot 76 (+6) on Saturday, while true freshman Will Hopkins carded 77 (+7). Hopkins is tied for 71st at 8-over par 148 while Choe's 9-over par 149 has him tied for 75th.
Arizona State and LSU are now tied for first, as both teams carded a 23-under par 537 going into Sunday. Arizona State's Chun An Yu climbed up the leaderboard with a 6-under par 64 second round to put him at 11-under par 129 following round two, good for a one stroke lead over Clemson's Bryson Nimmer (130).
The final round of the Maui Jim Intercollegiate begins on Sunday at 7:00 a.m., local time. Live stats can be followed at www.golfstat.com
