Sep 27, 2018 | Football
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Adding to his impressive list of off-the-field honors, Kansas State senior right tackle Dalton Risner is one of 30 candidates nationally for the 2018 Senior CLASS Award, the organization has announced.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Risner is the first Wildcat to be a candidate for the award since Tyler Lockett was named a finalist in 2014. Prior to Lockett, Collin Klein was a finalist in 2012 and Ty Zimmerman was a candidate in 2013.
A product of Wiggins, Colorado, Risner has made an impact in a multitude of ways. A 2017 First Team All-American who holds a 3.603 GPA, Risner started the RiseUp Foundation with its mission to "encourage everyone to RISE above the evil and sin in this world and be a positive shining light in the lives of others." The ultimate goal for the foundation is to motivate people through his words and actions, through his stories and his relationships.
He also visits Buttonwood Special Needs Home and has bonded with one member in particular, Mike, while he is a Big Brother to Kayden, who was battling leukemia but is in remission. Risner is also a speaker at local schools, and those speeches center around dreaming big and accomplishing goals. He visits Camp Hope each summer to spend time, sign autographs and give speeches to children who are battling cancer. Risner also takes the time to send notes message and signed memorabilia to people – both young and old – battling various difficulties in life.
The 2017-18 Big 12 Male Sportsperson of the Year, Risner was named a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy on Wednesday and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team earlier this month, while he is also a candidate for the Wuerffel Trophy.
The determine the final Senior CLASS Award winner, the 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.
The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the football bowl season in early January. For more information on the candidates, visit www.seniorCLASSaward.com.
K-State hosts No. 18 Texas on Saturday inside Bill Snyder Family Stadium. The game, which kicks off at 2:30 p.m., will be shown nationally on FS1.
