Wildcats To Finish Fall Slate In Mexico

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Have clubs, will travel. The K-State Women's Golf team will finish their fall season away from the changing seasons in Kansas when it opens play at the Battle at the Beach hosted by TCU in sunny San José del Cabo, Mexico Friday. The event marks the team's first competition played outside of the United States for the program since 2007 when they traveled to Ensenada, Mexico for the Baja Classic.
The tournament will take place at Club Campestre San José's par-72, 6,280-yard course which is spread across the foothills of the Sierra del la Laguna Mountains, between the mountains and the sea on the Baja California Peninsula.
"If you can't get excited about playing here, I don't know what to tell you," K-State head coach Kristi Knight said. "The community has been welcoming already, that's always a good thing. It's nice when you arrive in a location and they're excited to have you. It's really refreshing (to be here), it's a beautiful golf course, good scenery, but a challenging golf course."
The last time K-State competed abroad, then-Wildcat Abbi Sunner finished as the individual runner-up. The 'Cats will look for similar positive results with redshirt senior Chloe Weir coming off her best finish of the year at the Jim West Challenge, placing tied for 22nd and shooting a career low 36 in the first two rounds (139). Weir is joined by juniors Reid Isaac and Niamh McSherry who have both collected top-5 finishes this fall slate. Freshman Haley Vargas and sophomore Briony Bayles round out the lineup for the Wildcats, making their third and fourth appearances this season, respectively.
"The ladies have practiced well, we're really close," Knight said. "In golf there's not a huge difference between having a great round and a mediocre round, it's just the little things, the self talk. Even though it was a little colder in preparation for this, they didn't bat an eye, didn't miss a beat, they're really looking forward to competing."
The Battle at the Beach will feature nine teams the Wildcats have not yet seen in competition this year: Augusta, Denver, Indianapolis, (18)LSU, Nebraska, San Jose State, UAB, (11)Vanderbilt, and (20)Virginia Tech. The sixteen team field also consists of Iowa, (14)Mississippi, Missouri, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, and TCU.
The sixteen teams will tee off Friday, starting at 8:30 a.m. (10:30 a.m. Central Standard Time) with a shotgun start and continuous play through 36 holes. Play will continue through Saturday with 18 holes played starting at 8:30 a.m. (10:30 a.m. Central Standard Time), followed by the last 18 holes played on Sunday starting at 7:15 a.m. (8:15 a.m. Central Standard Time).
