MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State participated in its annual "Shave for the Brave" in support of pediatric cancer following the conclusion of its Fall World Series Sunday afternoon, in which Team Purple prevailed 7-1 at Tointon Family Stadium.
K-State student-athletes and coaches combined to raise over $27,000 for the College Baseball Vs. Cancer campaign, the signature fundraising campaign of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. K-State's total is the highest among all collegiate baseball programs after it led the nation with over $26,000 raised a year ago.
"I love it because it tells me I have the right guys in my clubhouse," head coach Pete Hughes said. "Kids that care about the right things. Kids that aren't entitled and feel truly privileged to have their health and get to play baseball at a great university. To be proactive and raise that amount of money in back-to-back years, speaks volumes."
K-State players, coaches and staff cut their hair in support of pediatric cancer following Sunday's intrasquad scrimmage.
"It's a great day in our program every year," Hughes said of Sunday's event. "We shave our heads in solidarity for a great cause."
"Shave for the Brave" is a staple event in Hughes' 19 Ways program, which is designed to have a positive impact on the Manhattan community on 19 different occasions during the year. For more on 19 Ways, visit the 19 Ways website here.
In the third game of the Fall World Series, Team Purple got home runs from Chris Ceballos and Dylan Phillips in a 7-1 victory. Ceballos ended the day with a game-high three hits, going 3 for 4 with two runs scored.
Ceballos' homer sparked a five-run fourth inning for Purple, as his long ball was the first five straight batters to reach base. Phillips followed with a single and later Zach Hogueisson drove him in with a triple. Daniel Carinci capped the inning when he roped a two-out, two-run single.
Phillips launched a two-run homer in the fifth, extending the lead to six runs for Purple. Phillips went 2 for 4 with a pair of runs scored while Carinci tallied two hits.
Team Grey starting pitcher Wesley Moore held Purple to one hit through the first three innings, striking out three, before Purple broke through with five in the fourth.
Back-to-back doubles from Kamron Willman and Austin Garrett in the third inning put across Grey's lone run. Willman, who homered Saturday, went 2 for 4 while Garrett doubled twice in a 2 for-3 effort.
Starting pitcher Nico Rodriguez struck out four in his three innings of work for Purple, allowing three hits and one run.
Logan Mueller and Luke Bay combined to hold Grey to one hit over the final four innings. Bay and Mueller each tallied a pair of strikeouts.
The Fall World Series marked the conclusion of the Wildcats' fall season. K-State begins its 2020 season on February 14 at UTRGV, beginning a four-game series with the Vaqueros.
