SAN JOSE DEL CABO, Mexico – K-State cut 10 strokes from its opening round total, including a team-best 1-over 73 from Niamh McSherry, but was unable to climb the leaderboard and remained in 13th after the second round of the Battle at the Beach Saturday.
The Wildcats shot a combined 12-over 300 at San Jose Club Campestre, 10 strokes better than an opening round 310 (+22) and saw McSherry drop two strokes from her first day tally to remain among the top-25 individuals in the 16-team field. K-State, which carded the 10th best round on Saturday, was stuck in 13th, three strokes behind regional-and-former-Big-12-Conference rivals Missouri (+31) and four strokes behind Nebraska (+30) with a combined 310-300—610 (+34).
McSherry birdied her final hole for the second consecutive day and remained tied for 22nd after shooting 75-73—148 (+4) over the first 36 holes. Chloe Weir was next on the leaderboard in a tie for 40th after shooting 75-76—151 (+7) with 18 holes to play on Sunday.
K-State's biggest improvement came from the bottom of the lineup as both Haley Vargas and Briony Bayles turned in significantly better rounds. Vargas carded a 15-over 87 in the first round – a tally that didn't contribute to the team score – before turning in the second-best round of any Wildcat with a 3-over 75 Tuesday. Bayles tied Weir at 4-under 76 for K-State's third and fourth counting scores, a day after turning in a 13-over 85. Reid Isaac fell off her opening round pace with an 80 (+8) Saturday.
"I'm proud of Briony and Haley for how they responded today," K-State head coach Kristi Knight said. "The team shaved 10 shots off our total from yesterday, Niamh had a very solid 73. A few big numbers kept us from being around par as a team today.
"We have one left in our fall season. There's no reason we can't shoot the lowest round tomorrow and climb the board. Every team we can beat matters for our overall season. We have to trust ourselves and commit to every shot, no regrets."
Ole Miss (+4) shot a 10-under 278 after an opening round 302 to supplant LSU (+5) at the top of the team standings after 36 holes, despite not using Chiara Tamburlini's 70-69—139 (-5), who is playing as an individual and leading the medalist hunt.
The Battle at the Beach concludes with a final round on Sunday. K-State will tee off at 7:15 a.m. local time with a shotgun start from tees 14-17.
