K-State Stalls in Final Minutes Against (15/15) Michigan State

BIMINI, Bahamas – Despite a combined 39 points and 23 rebounds from Ayoka Lee and Peyton Williams, K-State was unable to hold a late fourth quarter lead against (15/15) Michigan State on Saturday evening in the 17th annual Junkanoo Jam with the Spartans prevailing 65-60.

Kansas State (3-3) was led by the interior tandem of Lee and Williams. Lee, who earned Junkanoo Jam – Bimini Division All-Tournament Team honors, finished with a career-high 22 points on 8-of-9 shooting and 6-of-7 from the foul line, 13 rebounds and a career-high six blocks. This was her second career game with a double-double and five or more blocks, becoming just the fourth player in program history with multiple games with a double-double and five or more blocks.

Williams carded her fourth double-double in five games played this season with 17 points and 10 rebounds. With her 17 points, Williams moved into a tie for 24th on the K-State career scoring list with Shalee Lehning (2005-09; 1,189 points). With her 10 rebounds, Williams moved into 13th on the K-State career rebounds list with 729 career boards.

Michigan State (6-1) took control of the first quarter with an 11-4 run to pull in front 19-13 with 4:42 remaining and force a Wildcat timeout. K-State (3-3) responded to the timeout with a 12-2 run to close out the frame and hold a 25-21 lead.

Williams started the run with a mid-range jumper. Lee then finished a putback and Christianna Carr buried the first of her two 3-pointers during the rally. Lee would score 11 points in the first quarter, tying the school record for points in a first quarter.

In the second quarter, K-State was held to six points in the frame but remained within two points at halftime, 33-31. The Wildcats held the Spartans to 23.5 percent (4-of-17) shooting in the second quarter.

Each team continued to slug it out defensively in the third quarter, as the team's combined for 15 total points on 6-of-28 shooting. K-State outscored Michigan State, 10-5, as Lee scored six of K-State's 10 points in the third stanza with the Wildcats holding a 41-38 lead.

Michigan State went in front with a 5-0 run, 43-41, but a pair of layups from Williams pushed the Wildcats back in front, 45-43, with 7:07 to play in the fourth quarter.

Williams would go on a 6-2 run on her own to push K-State into a 54-53 lead with 2:28 remaining. The Spartans would answer with an 8-0 run to build a 61-54 lead with 45 seconds to play. Carr would bury a pair of 3-pointers, including a near mid-court three following a steal from Cymone Goodrich with 25 seconds left to pull K-State within 3, 63-60. Carr would end the evening with 12 points.

Kansas State shot 39.7 percent (23-of-58) from the field for the day. The Wildcats shot 64.7 percent (11-of-17) from the field in the opening quarter, but were held to a combined 6-of-26 (.231) from the field in the second and third quarters. Michigan State was held to a 33.9 percent effort (21-of-62). The Wildcats outrebounded the Spartans, 40-37.

K-State returns to action in Bramlage Coliseum on Tuesday, as the Wildcats host UIW at 6:30 p.m.

Fort Riley's Operation Santa Claus helps service members and their families provide gifts to their children during the holiday season. All donations will go towards a Fort Riley soldier, especially to families under financial constraints and families of deployed, fallen, or injured soldiers.
