Willman Homers, Team Grey Claims Game 2 of Fall World Series

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Junior Kamron Willman homered while sophomore Jeff Boggess drove in two runs to push Team Grey to a 6-3 win over Team Purple in the second game of K-State's Fall World Series Saturday afternoon at Tointon Family Stadium.
"I saw a lot of two-out hits today and that's how you win ballgames," head coach Pete Hughes said. "We were productive against some pretty good pitchers. I'll always take a well-pitched game over a big offensive day, but we had some guys get some big hits with two outs and that's something you always stress to your team."
Four of Grey's six runs came with two outs, including a two-run triple by Boggess in the first inning. Willman's home run sparked a three-run third inning that broke a 2-2 tie, as Boggess singled and scored on Chris Herb's two-run, two-out single in the frame.
A pair of K-State's weekend starters from a season ago went head to head, as Big 12 Freshman of the Year Jordan Wicks (Purple) and All-Big 12 Freshman Team selection Griffin Hassall (Grey) got the starts for their respective sides.
Hassall tossed four innings with one strikeout and two earned runs allowed while Wicks punched out one with two runs on two hits in his two innings of work.
Senior Luke Hauswirth took over for Hassall and finished with two scoreless innings, yielding one hit with a strikeout.
Terrence Spurlin, who homered Friday, went 2 for 2 with a double, a walk and two runs scored for Team Grey.
Team Purple senior Caleb Littlejim roped a ball of the left field wall and raced home for an inside-the-park home run in the fourth inning.
Junior outfielder Zach Hogueisson doubled and scored in the second on an RBI single from Jordan Maxson. Maxson led Purple with two hits, going 2 for 3 with a run and a run batted in.
Lefty Eric Torres held Team Grey hitless over the final 1 2/3 innings. Torres allowed just one baserunner (walk) while striking out one batter.
The Fall World Series will wrap up Sunday at 1 p.m. Following Sunday's finale, players and staff will participate in "Shave for the Brave," where they will cut their hair in support of children's cancer research and raise funds to benefit Vs. Cancer, the signature fundraising campaign of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation.
"It's a great day in our program every year," Hughes said of Sunday's "Shave for the Brave" event. "We just took over the national lead for fundraising for pediatric cancer research. That's what I am most proud with this group of guys, that they take the initiative and realize what's important. Tomorrow will be a nice way to end our fall with shaving our heads in solidarity for a great cause."
As of Saturday, K-State student-athletes and coaches have combined to raise over $24,000 for the College Baseball Vs. Cancer campaign – the highest amount raised in the nation. Last year, K-State was the nation's leader with over $26,000 raised.
"Shave for the Brave" is a staple event in Hughes' 19 Ways program, which is designed to have a positive impact on the Manhattan community on 19 different occasions during the year. For more on 19 Ways, visit the 19 Ways website here.
With the ongoing improvements being made to Tointon Family Stadium, fans are asked to enter the stadium near Brandeberry Indoor Complex and follow marked signs to the seating area down the first base line.
