MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State outside hitter Brynn Carlson was selected to the 2019 Academic All-America Third Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the organization announced Monday.
Carlson, a redshirt sophomore, became the first Wildcat to be named Academic All-America since 2010 (JuliAnne Chisholm), as she boasted a perfect 4.0 grade-point average as a nutrition, dietetics and kinesiology major. Carlson adds to her season academic honors after being named CoSIDA All-District First Team and Academic All-Big 12 First Team.
The 6-foot-4 Woodbury, Minnesota, native has been a first-team Academic All-Big 12 selection each of the last two seasons while also claiming Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team honors in 2017-18.
Carlson produced her first 300-kill season in 2019, leading the Cats offense with 309 kills and 328 points. She set career highs in kills per set (2.83), sets played (109), hitting percentage (.203) and digs (67).
Carlson claims the sixth Academic All-America selection in program history and fifth under head coach Suzie Fritz. She joins Chisholm (2009, 2010), Cari Jensen (2002, 2003) and Jennifer Koehn (1982) in the prestigious club.
CoSIDA honored 21 student-athletes in NCAA Division I, with seven athletes named to each of the three teams. Carlson was one of 12 with a 4.0 GPA and one of just two honored from the Big 12, as she joined Texas' Micaya White (Second Team).
