
Ten Wildcats Earn Lage Academic Achievement Award

MANHATTAN, Kansas – Kansas State student-athletes continue to receive recognition for their excellence in the classroom, as 10 Wildcats received the ninth annual Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award, which is the Big 12 Conference's highest academic honor, in an announcement by the league office on Wednesday.
The 10 recipients from K-State are: Nikole Cain, rowing (senior, agricultural education), Morgan Coffman, track & field (senior, management & life sciences), Kaylin Edwards, rowing (senior, food science & industry), Simone Fassina, track & field (senior, food science & industry), Ben Fernandez, men's golf (junior, finance), Blaise Gammon, football (junior, finance), Reilly Killeen, volleyball (senior, kinesiology), Pierson McAtee, men's basketball (redshirt junior, accounting & finance), Mckenzi Weber, volleyball (junior, bakery science & management) and Peyton Williams, women's basketball & volleyball (junior, anthropology).
In total, 109 student-athletes from Big 12 member institutions earned the honor in 2019. The award is in memory of Lage, who served as the Oklahoma State faculty athletics representative with the NCAA and the Big Eight/Big 12 Conference from 1983 until his death in 2007. He was the chairman on three occasions (1985-86, 93-94 and 2003-04).
In order to be eligible for the accolade, student-athletes must have lettered at least once in their career while maintaining residence at their institution for at least one academic year. The honoree, which can only be recognized once, should have 100 hours of earned credit with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.80 at the time of the nomination.
The Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award recipients will receive public recognition at the Phillips 66 Big 12 Basketball Championships.
To date K-State student-athletes have been recognized with the following honors: 53 Academic All-Big 12 recipients which includes record numbers for football, soccer and volleyball. Football's Dalton Risner was named a finalist for the Campbell Trophy, the Wuerffel Trophy and the Senior CLASS Award while also earning the Allstate/American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team. In addition, football's Adam Holtorf and Zach Reuter and women's basketball's Peyton Williams were named to the Google Cloud Academic All-District VII team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
K-State ranks among the league's best in terms of academic success as it continues to set a national standard in terms of APR, as all programs are currently well above the required NCAA standard.
