Weber Selected USBWA District VI Coach of the Year; Wade, Brown Named to All-District VI Team

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State head coach Bruce Weber was selected as the U.S. Basketball Writers Association District VI Coach of the Year, while seniors Barry Brown, Jr., and Dean Wade were each named to the All-District VI team for the second consecutive season, the organization announced on Tuesday (March 12).
District VI encompasses the states of Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska and North and South Dakota.
Weber is the third Wildcat head coach to be named USBWA District Coach of the Year, joining Bob Huggins (2007) and Frank Martin (2010), while Brown and Wade are the first Wildcat duo to repeat All-District VI honors.
The duo become the 16th and 17th Wildcats to earn recognition from the USBWA, which has been selecting All-District Teams since the 1956-57 season. They are the fourth tandem to be selected for All-District honors in the same season, following Michael Beasley and Bill Walker in 2008 and Denis Clemente and Jacob Pullen in 2010.
Brown and Wade were joined on the 10-member All-District VI team by Creighton's Ty-Shon Alexander, Iowa's Tyler Cook, South Dakota State's Mike Daum, Kansas' Devon Dotson and Dedric Lawson, Oklahoma's Christian James, Drake's Nick McGlynn, Nebraska's James Palmer and Iowa State's Marial Shayok. In addition, Lawson was named the District Player of the Year to go along with Weber as District Coach of the Year.
In addition to earning All-District honors, Brown and Wade also picked up more All-Big 12 honors on Tuesday, as they were both selected to The Associated Press' All-Big 12 First Team. Brown was one of three unanimous selections on the First Team, along with Texas Tech's Jarrett Culver and Kansas' Dedric Lawson, while Wade and Iowa State's Marial Shayok finished off the team.
On Sunday, Brown and Wade became the first Wildcat duo to be named to the Coaches' All-Big 12 First Team, while Brown was selected as the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year.
Weber led K-State to its second Big 12 regular-season title in his seven-year tenure, as the Wildcats shared the championship with No. 7/6 Texas Tech with identical 14-4 league records. He is the first head coach in school history to post consecutive seasons of 24 or more victories.
The school's all-time leader in both games played (136) and steals (252), Brown led the Wildcats in nearly every statistical category, including scoring (15.1 ppg.), double-digit scoring games (26), 20-point games (seven), field goals made (172) and attempted (386), free throws made (86) and attempted (122) and steals (63). He connected on 44.6 percent from the field, including 30.2 percent from 3-point range, and shot 70.5 percent from the line.
Wade proved to one of the most valuable players in the Big 12, as the Wildcats went 20-5 in games in which he played, including 13-2 in league action. He averaged 12.9 points on 49.2 percent (122-of-248) shooting, including 41.8 percent (23-of-55) from 3-point range, and 78.9 percent (56-of-71) from the free throw line to go with a team-best 6.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists in 30.4 minutes per game. He ranked second on the team in scoring, double-digit scoring games (19) and 20-point games (four).
K-State is the top seed at this week's Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship at the Sprint Center in Kansas City and will play the winner of the first-round matchup between No. 8 seed TCU (19-12, 7-11 Big 12) and No. 9 seed Oklahoma State (12-19, 5-13 Big 12) at 1:30 p.m., CT on Thursday on ESPN or ESPN2.
