McSherry in Top Five, Cats Tied for Sixth at End of Round One

MESA, Ariz. – Kansas State sophomore Niamh McSherry carded an even-par 72 on Friday to lead the Wildcat women's golf team during round one of the Notre Dame Clover Cup held at the par-72, 6,184-yard Longbow Golf Club.

McSherry was able to bounce back from some tough holes thanks to five birdies on the day. The Lurgan, Northern Ireland, native is tied for third place and is one stroke out of second.

K-State carded an 18-over par 306 in round one to enter Saturday's second round tied for sixth place with Houston. The Wildcats and Cougars are three shots back of host school Notre Dame.

"There are definitely some positives to take away from today," head coach Kristi Knight said. "As a team, we played the par 5's well and were near the top in birdies. We had a few missed shots that were costly, but we are still in the mix after round one. I am proud of the team for hanging in there. Firm greens and wind make staying patient vital."

Following McSherry for the Wildcats was senior Chloe Weir, who carded a 5-over par 77 be tied for 30th place. Sophomores Reid Isaac and Ella Adams are tied for 40th and 47th as they carded a 6-over par 78 and 7-over par 79, respectively. Freshman Briony Bayles rounded out the scoring lineup by shooting a 12-over par 84 to reside in a tie for 78th place. Sophomore Darby Deans, who is competing as an individual, is tied for 66th place with a score of 10-over par 82.

The top team in the country, USC, leads after round one as the Trojans carded an impressive 4-over par 292. Mississippi State and Kentucky are tied for second at 10-over par 298. Leoni Bettel of Kentucky sits atop the individual leaderboard at 5-under par 67.

The Notre Dame Clover Cup resumes Saturday with an 8 a.m. (MT) start to the second round. Live results can be followed at www.birdiefire.com.
