Excuse Our Mess – Tointon Construction Alters Fan Entry to Stadium
Mar 06, 2019 | Baseball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Fans attending Kansas State baseball games this season at Tointon Family Stadium will find the 18-year-old facility amid a major renovation that will relocate the main entrance along Jack Hartman Drive outside the left field bullpen.
With construction underway, the normal main entrance to Tointon Family Stadium off College Avenue has been closed. For the 2019 season, a temporary ticket booth and stadium entry have been relocated along Jack Hartman Drive (Gate 1) outside the left field bullpen and adjacent to the west parking lot of Bill Snyder Family Stadium. Fans will enter the facility and walk along the left field wall to access the stadium's seating bowl.
Friday's home opener against Old Dominion, which was originally scheduled for a 3 p.m. start, has been pushed back to a 6 p.m. first pitch due to travel considerations. Saturday's game remains at 2 p.m. with the series finale Sunday at 1 p.m.
All permanent seating in the stadium bowl is available during the construction. In addition, a new patio area in right field will be open this season featuring concessions at select games, patio table seating and standing room along the foul-line wall. However, the grassy berm and standing-room area along the left-field wall are within the construction zone and closed for the season.
The $20 million project will feature an updated exterior façade for Tointon Family Stadium and provide a new clubhouse and office complex for baseball while constructing the 1,400-seat Buser Family Park soccer facility. The project, led by BG Consultants and construction partners Mortensen/G.E. Johnson, will be completed for the 2020 baseball season.
When construction is completed in 2020, Tointon Family Stadium will show off a new facade and roof, as well as an expansive new clubhouse along the third-base grandstand. The clubhouse will house on the ground level a spacious lounge, locker room and team meeting room for the student-athletes, a sports medicine and rehabilitation area, and renovated space for equipment and laundry. On the level above, new coaches' offices and meeting space will overlook the field. In addition, the existing suites and press box will be remodeled, the stadium's club area expanded and all new chairback seating installed.
During the initial phase of the stadium renovation last summer, the playing field received a major upgrade as new infield turf was installed, including the pitcher's mound, and the team dugouts were updated with new benches, padding and flooring. The outfield wall was rebuilt with protective padding, while new expansive bullpens were constructed behind the left- and right-field walls. The chain-link fencing along the first- and third-base lines was replaced with a split-stone padded wall with drink rails to enhance the standing-room experience. Another significant improvement completed in time for this season was the conversion of the stadium lighting to the state-of-the-art Musco Total Lighting Control LED system, which enhances the players' ability to track the baseball during night games with a brighter uniform light directed onto the field with less glare.
Coverage of the entire three-game series with Old Dominion will be available on K-StateHD.TV as well as on the K-State Sports Roku app and Apple TV. Fans can also listen to the action on News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM) with online audio streaming at K-StateSports.com/watch.
