Apr 13, 2019 | Baseball
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas designated hitter Zach Zubia drove in a career-high six runs with a grand slam to power the 14th-ranked Longhorns by K-State 10-2 Saturday to even the series at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Zubia's grand slam came as part of a seven-run second inning that was keyed by five consecutive base hits off K-State starter Kasey Ford. The Longhorns brought 11 hitters to the plate in the inning and ended with seven hits off Ford.
Ford took the loss after throwing two innings and allowing seven earned on seven hits, all coming in the second inning. The junior right-hander struck out five.
Caleb Littlejim hit his team-best sixth home run of the season in the ninth inning. Zach Kokoska delivered a two-out RBI single in the sixth.
Freshman Dylan Phillips led the Wildcats (15-21, 2-6 Big 12) with two hits. Thomas Hughes doubled and scored in the sixth.
The Longhorns (23-14, 5-5 Big 12) added single runs in the fourth and fifth off reliever Luke Hauswirth. Zubia provided an RBI single before catcher Michael McCann's fielder's choice RBI put UT up 9-0.
K-State got on the board in the top of the sixth after Kokoska drove in Hughes with two outs. Hughes roped a double off the wall earlier in the frame.
Zubia's sixth RBI, a sacrifice fly in the sixth, pushed the Longhorn lead back to nine runs at 10-1.
Hauswirth tossed four innings in relief of Ford, allowing three earned runs on three hits with a pair of strikeouts. The four innings of work marked a career high for the junior righty.
Blair Henley earned the victory for Texas, allowing one run on six hits with seven strikeouts over seven innings. It marked Henley's sixth quality outing over his last seven starts as he improved his record to 6-1.
McCann collected two hits and drove in two for Texas. Austin Todd scored two runs with a triple while Sam Bertelson went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
The three-game series concludes Sunday at 1 p.m. and will be televised on the Longhorn Network and streaming on the ESPN app. Radio coverage is available on News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM) with live audio streaming at K-StateSports.com/watch.
