Weir Tied for Fourth at Big 12 Championship

Apr 14, 2019 | Women's Golf

BROKEN ARROW, Okla. – Kansas State senior women's golfer Chloe Weir began her final conference championship on the right foot on Sunday as she carded an even-par 72 to conclude the first 18 holes tied for fourth place in the 2019 Big 12 Championship held at the par-72, 6,341-yard Golf Club of Oklahoma.

Weir was 1-over par on the front nine but went 1-under par on the back thanks to birdies on Nos. 16 and 18. She is among a group of eight golfers who shot even par or better on Sunday, four of whom are ranked in the top 100 nationally according to Golfstat.

As a team, K-State went 23-over par 311 on the first day to reside in ninth place. The Wildcats are six shots back of a tie for seventh between No. 37 Texas Tech and 39th-ranked Iowa State.

"Chloe was having fun from the get-go," head coach Kristi Knight said. "In fact, she said to me on the tee box, 'This is fun.' This is where her younger teammates can learn that there's a lot of things that happen in a round of golf. You can't tie to much emotion – good or bad – into almost having a one or hitting it into a penalty area.

"She fought for the round because she started hot; she started right out of the gate," Knight said of Weir. "She was under par, then had the double when she just made a bad swing. That happens. She bounced back and fought back."

Weir was close to a hole-in-one on No. 5 as she landed near the hole for a tap-in birdie, her third of the day. She then went 4-over par on the next 10 holes but birdied two of the final three. On No. 18 – a par 5 – Weir chipped her third shot to within five feet and sunk the birdie putt to finish the day even.

Reid Isaac finished the day at 4-over par 76, which included a birdie on her final hole. She enters the second round tied for 23rd. Niamh McSherry is tied for 39th at 9-over par 81. Briony Bayles carded a 10-over par 82 and is tied for 41st, while Darby Deans shot a 17-over par 89 and enters the second round in 45th.

"We definitely would have liked to see lower scores because we've been playing better than what we showed today," Knight said. "Reid battled in there for 4-over. There were just too many doubles and triples overall. They'll go out tomorrow and just start firing, and I know they'll be fine. We're definitely going to bring more confidence. I can guarantee you that."

Texas, which entered the Big 12 Championship ranked second in the nation, was the only team to shoot under par in round one as the Longhorns fired a 1-under par 287. UT leads 32nd-ranked Baylor by five strokes. Sara Kouskova paces all players at 5-under par 67, one shot ahead of Baylor's Gurleen Kaur.

Tee times for the second round of the 2019 Big 12 Championship are set to begin at 8 a.m., on Monday as the Wildcats are paired with Texas Tech and Iowa State. Live scoring can be followed at www.golfstat.com.
