Wildcats Battle Wind, Tough Course in Second Round

BROKEN ARROW, Okla. – Battling windy conditions throughout most of the morning, the Kansas State women's golf team could not make up any ground on Monday during the second round of the 2019 Big 12 Championship held at the par-72, 6,341-yard Golf Club of Oklahoma.

K-State carded a 32-over par 320 during the second round on a day when all 45 competitors in the field shot over par. The Wildcats enter Tuesday's final round in ninth place at 55-over par 631, nine strokes away from eighth-place and 39th-ranked Iowa State, one of six Big 12 teams ranked in the top 40 in the nation.

"Today, being the first team off, there was a lot of wind," head coach Kristi Knight said. "I think, being in the position they were in (entering the round), they came out with a mindset of wanting to have a good day. There was more positive energy. That's the mindset they started with, but it was going to be one of those days where you throw par 72 out the window and just play one shot at a time and one hole at a time.

"It is a challenge as a coach because I know there is no quit in them," Knight continued. "They are not quitting and doing the best they can, but they are also pressing. In these conditions, every little miss is magnified. This is a championship golf course, it's a really good golf course. This is a great league – there are nine good teams in this league – but the golf ball was going everywhere for everyone."

Senior Chloe Weir, who entered play on Monday tied for fourth place, fell one spot to a tie for fifth with five other players at 6-over par 150. The senior from Belfast, Northern Ireland, carded an up-and-down 78 in round two with four birdies on the day.

"Chloe played a ton of good golf, but she had a big number on the 15th hole," Knight said. "She's playing very well."

Freshman Briony Bayles made a three-spot improvement on the leaderboard to a tie for 38th at 17-over par 161 thanks to a 7-over par 79 on Monday. She is four shots behind fellow Wildcat Reid Isaac, who is tied for 27th place at 13-over par 157.

Niamh McSherry enters Tuesday's final round tied for 42nd at 19-over par 163, while Darby Deans is in 45th place at 27-over par 171.

Texas, the second-ranked team in the nation, takes a sizeable 22-stroke lead into the final round as the Longhorns are at 8-over par 584. UT holds the top two individuals in Agathe Laisne and Sara Kouskova at 1-under par 143 and 3-over par 147, respectively.

The final round of the 2019 Big 12 Championship will begin at 8 a.m., on Tueday with the Wildcats again paired with Iowa State and Texas Tech. Live results can be followed at www.golfstat.com.
