BROKEN ARROW, Okla. – Kansas State senior women's golfer Chloe Weir closed out her career on a high note on Tuesday as she finished in the top 10 of the 2019 Big 12 Championship held at the Golf Club of Oklahoma.
Â
A product of Belfast, Northern Ireland, Weir carded a final-round score of 5-over par 77 and concluded the event in a tie for eighth place at 11-over par 227. Her eighth-place finish gave her Big 12 All-Tournament Team accolades, becoming the first Wildcat to place in the top 10 of the conference tournament since Madison Talley did so in 2016.
Â
As a team, K-State finished in ninth place at 75-over par 939 following a 20-over par 308 on Tuesday, the Wildcats' best round of the tournament.
Â
"We wanted them to start out with a more confident and aggressive mindset," head coach Kristi Knight said. "We're pleased with what we saw. They never stopped competing or battling. The conditions were really tough; the greens were really firm and fast for everyone.
Â
"I really liked the battle I saw in the team," Knight continued. "Even though the results weren't up to our expectations this week, going forward, it's a great experience for this team. Hopefully they'll take this as learning experience and it will pay off next year."
Â
Weir was 4-over par on the front nine but was able to settle down with a birdie and only two bogeys on the back as the challenging golf course allowed for only three of the 45 players to shot even or under par on Tuesday.
Â
"Chloe played very well. She was solid all around," Knight said. "She had two holes that really held her up. She played probably 50 holes of great golf, two mediocre holes and two bad holes. It was a very good tournament for her."
Â
"Being a senior, it was really special to come out here and be able to play," Weir said. "I played some of the greatest golf of my college career. I'm really excited for the girls for next year. They're a really good team and they have a lot of talent."
Â
Freshman Briony Bayles put together the best round of the day for K-State with a 1-over par 73. She was 5-over par following the first four holes, but the Durham, England, product made five birdies and only one bogey over the final 14 holes. Thanks to her impressive finish, Bayles jumped 15 spots on the leaderboard to a tie for 23rd at 18-over par 234.
Â
"I think Briony just stayed calm," Knight said. "I don't think she got down on herself. She didn't start out of the gate very well, but she picked up a couple of birdies and that turned the tide a little bit. She just settled in, and that shows me, as a freshman, what she learned from day one to today. That's a huge step for her."
Â
Reid Isaac concluded the tournament tied for 31st at 21-over par 237, and Niamh McSherry finished in 43rd place at 29-over par 245. Darby Deans carded her best round of the event at 6-over par 78, as she finished in 45th place with a score of 33-over par 249.
Â
Texas ran away with its third-straight Big 12 Championship with a 54-hole score of 13-over par 877. The Longhorns finished 37 strokes ahead of second-place Baylor, as the Longhorns claimed the top four individuals, including conference champion Agathe Laisne at 2-over par 218.
